Saw him only once live, at the Cuckoo's Nest in Costa Mesa, Orange County, CA. One of the very best shows I've ever attended, David on tour with his solo band. I had to wring out my t-shirt after the show, it was that good.

I think this is my favorite Dolls story. At one of The Ponderosa Stomps me and Belock were waiting for a shuttle bus outside the hotel. There was a rather large black security guard holding court, telling some of the guests how he liked all kinds of music. He started naming some acts he liked...he included The New York Dolls. I turned around and looked at him...he looked back said, "You've got a personality crisis....you didn't think I knew, did you?".
