Thanks for the tribute to John Russell this morning Jeff! His attack on that archtop could go from lightening to butter in an instant, and he held a sense of spacing, density, and shape that can really sculpt a small ensemble’s flow through time. Its a pleasure being mentally transported back to many of his great Mopomoso sets with this.

Except for Bowie, all this stuff was fairly underground as far as Detroit ratio was concerned (we'd already lost our one "underground" outlet, so it was a vast wasteland for about about a decade until one person on our NPR station started spinning in the afternoons.)

I knew Mott, Bowie, T. Rex. || Yep Jeff, Mike Garson was the pianist. On the night Bowie died in '16, Garson called WFMU from LA to talk. Forget the DJ, it was a woman DJ.

Might have been Therese, TDK--she was the person on the air when the news came across the wire. I followed her in the 3-6 am slot, and I immediately threw out the show I had planned and went to an all-Bowie show, and then of course the next few days were full of Bowie tributes of one kind of another.

Garson played for Bowie for a long time, but he also had his own thing, mildly New-Age-ish, on among other label's Keith Johnson's Reference Recordings, who continue to produce superb sounding records. I think Johnson uses gear designed by Tim de Paravicini. I know that the woefully underplayed Billy Mintz drummed with Garson.

Thanks, doctorjazz, but I meant de Paravicini and his marvelous recording gear. I thought Johnson used EAR gear, but I'm confusing with Water Lily Acoustics. I also sometimes associate de Paravicini with the Cercle Kalistos LP label (best sounding harpsichord recording ever), but that's mistaken. CK used Yves-Bernard Andre gear.
