great thing about Hungarian is once you learn the pronunciation it’s 100% consistent. no irregular spellings or pronunciations.

Josh, how would one pronounce the name “Soltesz”?

Good evening Bethany! Have you ever read Xenakis' book "Formalized Music"? I've been battling my way through it the last couple of weeks and would be interested to know what you make of it. His grasp of the mathematics (my background) which he uses seems a bit shaky, but I've not found any substantial criticism of the book online.

Thanks @josh, I appreciate your help and definitely want to take you up on your offer for Hungarian pronounciation. For tonight, though, too many balls in the air with remote studio broadcasting - so I hope all will forgive me for the slaughter!!

@josh -- that is awesome!
i am Hungarian, but unfortunately did not learn the language growing up (i was born in 1959, my parents were living in Atlanta for a few years in the early 60s -- speaking a foreign language was NOT encouraged)
i did take a beginners' language course some years ago, and as *confusing* as some of the sounds may be (especially those vowels! like combinations of Sanskrit vowels, at least for me!) -- you are absolutely right, TOTALLY consistent

if anything, it is English that is muddled and inconsistent in its orthography / pronunciation

?:

Did Bela Bartok compose his music in Buda (west side of the Danube) or Pest (east side).
  8:47pm
bunyan:

That's what you get from mixing Germanic and Romance languages when holding land on and off the Continent... (English didn't even have _consistent_ formal orthography until the late 18th-Century or so...
  8:48pm
headcleaner:

@bunyan: yeah, English is a giant crack-up basically

? Bartok’s house is on the Buda side in a neighborhood called Rose Hill (rozsadomb). the liszt akademia is in pest
