Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Here, there, and nowhere! Saw Daniel Carter play on N 12th St on the sidewalk last Sunday.

(also, I played a music fest b/tn New Paltz and Kingston, upstate NY. I found a piano harp from the 30s in a barn, and played it w/ dessicated sunflower stalks and a knife, I came up w/ no instruments)

@ngh: are you still in the NYC area?

yes, wow. would love to have heard that.

I just got back to Orlando 2 days ago.

(my playing was relayed from a contact mic while the percussionist relayed through fx. Also, there was ambient bleeps and blops as avant dancers performed in front of projections in front of the other barn. Also, deep woods multimedia installations and on the lake.)

northguineahills:

I wish I could have seen Allan live. After my 16 years in Brooklyn, I probably saw him, as I realize we musician friends in common.

So you're back to being the station's Florida man, known for doing cool stuff (it's WFMU, not going with the cliché here)
Avatar 2:57pm

I missed volunteering at the mothership as my friend got into a fight w/ his missus and needed space (he just spent a month w/ her w/ family in Turkey), so, I didn't sleep the night before I was supposed to me Scott at Monty Hall).

Apparently, fred, I suppose so. (first time I played live in 3 years).

@ngh: I guess Orlando is not primarily known for its experimental music scene, though there must be one

Hi free world!

Orlando must miss Sam Rivers! I think he added something special to the scene there.

Avatar 3:15pm
northguineahills:

@Allan: I first saw Sam Rivers when I was 18 (William Parker and Mathew Shipp also played) In Orlando (I was in Gainesville at the time).. It was my Damascene moment, that got me out my indie rock ghetto in my head, and w/in two years, started to have the confidence to play live, and I discovered WFMU, etc, so..it was a formative moment.

Yes, there is an experimental scene here, but considering the population, it's rather small....

I think Ken and his Party Girls would approve of these tendencies

@ngh: in my experience, experimental scenes are like anarchist unions (or NME genres): one you get past double digits, a split is overdue. Double digits is already a strain

Sadly, musicians from central Asia are banned here with no end in sight. Indian musicians are still allowed, so I got some tickets for these shows
