Favoriting Cratedigger's Lung with Rich In Washington: Playlist from November 26, 2021 Favoriting

Rich in Washington's avatar View Rich in Washington's profile Favoriting

A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm

I'll bet when you play Rockit at that sweet 16 party, a bunch of millennial kids think it's the Miami Vice theme.

For playing "Close (To the Edit)" you get exactly what I got when I played it on my show earlier this year, that is to say a lunch of the vegetarian chili from Trader Joe's, which I bought and cooked myself

I think peak SST was when they had ST, Minutemen and Meat Puppets on their roster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
ultradamno:

Certainly the label had a more focused identity then.

100 Flowers are underappreciated, there really is little significant difference between that incarnation and Urinals, but the earlier name seems to get more respect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
Rich in Washington:

Urinals coming up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
ultradamno:

It got a lot harder for good SST records to distinguish themselves against the field of all the other SST records after awhile. Same with Homestead
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
Rich in Washington:

They did get fairly diversified in the mid to late 80s but the larger indies started trawling for bands and SST had some peculiar accounting practices. Nearly every band who left them had acrimonious legal battles with them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Will the Sound Guy:

I bought the minutemen double nickels on the dime and gave it to a friend... I need to get that double lp again. that copy was clean too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
Rich in Washington:

I foolishly gave a lot of my hardcore & punk records away in the late 90s and have been slowly buying some back but also buying CD reissues, etc.
Double Nickel is one of those where the CD reissue is just fine with me. I also had, and miss, Three Way Tie For Last.

Yeah, there's some pretty funny moments in Border Radio, like when "Craig" from "DDT Records" leaves messages for Chris D that seem to speak to some frustration there.

I understand that Greg Ginn is not universally admired for his business acumen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
ultradamno:

Well, it did get to the point where Greg performed as Black Flag by himself with backing tracks, attesting to his general popularity among those who've worked with him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh wow. I did not know that. Like, live?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
Zipperhead7:

Hmm . . . the Bernard Stollman of punk?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
Will the Sound Guy:

the whole flag, black flag thing got all torqued up at the time...

Hi Constantly Choking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm

I liked when he started bringing in the theremin and awkwardly tried to "play" it and guitar at the same time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
Rich in Washington:

What? Really?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
Will the Sound Guy:

They did show pics of Belinda watching The Germs during The Go-Go's Rock Hall induction bio package. Probably as close as they'll get to it.

Yeah, 100 Flowers/Urinals, largely same lineup (Urinals were a five piece at some points, but pared down to the core trio...)

Can't abide forging Pettibon but I don't really hate that fallen artist's paintings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

Gawd. I need to read that!
I do remember Raymond going on a rant about some relatives stealing his art or records or baseball cards or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

There's a fun Flipside Video Magazine you can find on You Tube that has 100 Flowers playing California's Falling Into The Ocean with D. Boon (who, of course, covered Urinals' Ack Ack Ack) and Keith Morris go-go dancing and providing vocal interjections and general roughhousing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm

...or maybe it was Surfing With The Shah, both songs are on it. It's #2, there's also some Minutemen and Angst on it

It would funny if this Hancock made onto the NWW list
