Hi Ironybread! Interesting to see the LP is on De Wolfe -- we used a lot of their "cleared" music library for ads, etc. when I worked in a recording studio in late '70s

Doctor Who is an even bigger rabbit hole. I've heard of people reaching out to TV stations in Africa to obtain tapes of missing episodes. Some are lost to the sands of time unfortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
Listener Howard & the Cats:

My mother is convinced that I love Python so much because she remembers watching it in the hospital before I was born. Even though that was before it had been written or filmed.
Avatar 1:45pm
Don-O:

Another A&E censored bit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
Zipperhead7:

Pretty tragic how much video is gone. I was at PBS archive in College Park MD many years ago and all their old two-inch videotapes were in boxes on shelves. Basically, you have one shot at digitization -- oxides peel off tape as it's played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
ironybread:

I'm afraid that an April Fools gag tweet claiming that Dr. Who episodes were being captured as they bounced back from the Oort cloud totally had me going...I so wanted that to be true
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
coelacanth∅:

i remember monty python on television the first time in the us. i was disappointed because my friend George and i already had the albums memorized before 1972 and the tv show changed most of the skits -to i thought less funny.
...probably because having no visuals forces the imagination.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
happymaan:

I'm from Chicago, we happened to taping Dr. Who back when the WTTW signal was hacked/jammed for a minute.
Avatar 1:49pm
Ike:

Yes, as a Doctor Who fan, that’s quite a big topic. Fortunately *all* those lost Jon Pertwee episodes from the early 70s have been recovered (not always in perfect-looking form, but totally watchable). I think the Canadians are largely responsible. It’s the B&W 60s serials that are decimated, especially the Patrick Troughton eps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
coelacanth∅:

that episode with the topless woman aired uncut on channel 13 in the early 70s as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
ironybread:

Hiiiike! The big takeaway is, indeed, to be your own archivist! Keep things because sometimes the makers of those things don't!
Avatar 1:56pm
Ike:

Weird Dr. Who trivia: for a long time, some color Jon Pertwee only survived in B&W form for some reason. His first serial survived in color, but his second and third were in B&W on PBS stations for a long time. PBS never explained this to viewers. So in the 80s and 90s all the Whovians were utterly baffled that their show started filming in color then went back to B&W! Then color again then B&W again!!! Etc. Eventually they restored the B&W ones to color through some complicated process using color from a slightly fuzzy or distorted North American NTSC copy.

@Ike If that's not dedication, I don't know what is. Such a fascinating show. The 10th Doctor is my Doctor, but I adore them all.

Mr Fab:

We saw a Betty White doc that they showed on what would have been her 100th b-day and it was amazing what footage they were able to find, e.g.: still-brunette White was the star of several pre-Mary Tyler Moore shows that ran a couple/few seasons that had been lost to history. They showed an entire episode of the totally forgotten series "Date With An Angel."
