MS, after hearing them multiple times on the show, I finally picked up that album by Nuevo this last Bandcamp Friday -- I learn slow, but I get there! Really good stuff.

It was a frustrating game in a lot of ways -- LA's continued insistence on running when it just wouldn't work was baffling. I guess watching Cinci's big weakest let them down when the stakes were highest was at least narratively fulfilling? And they'd kept Donald out up to then. Watching the best ever at his job win the game, though, that was pretty sweet.

From 500songs.com "Dylan joined Vee’s band for a short while under the stage name Elston Gunn, playing the piano, though he was apparently not very good (he could only play in C, according to some sources I’ve read), and he didn’t stay in Vee’s band very long. But while he was in Vee’s band, he would tell friends and relatives that he *was* Bobby Vee, and at least some people believed him."

I think the game was good as a pure football game in large part due to the refs not throwing flags for the better part of 3 quarters. Did anyone else notice the flags started to fly in the final 5 minutes or so? I like football when the refs let them play and save the flags for blatant calls. It didn't feel right near the end to suddenly see penalty after penalty against the Bengals, although they did miss a huge call with the Bengals.

Te Elston Gunnn (note the spelling--that's what he called himself) story is true. Bobby Vee said in an interview: "“Bill was blown away. ‘Man, how good can this be? This was as good as it gets!’ And went over to the radio station with him, over to KGFO, and there was this piano in the studio and auditioned him on the piano. He came back and he said, ‘He played pretty good in the key of C.’ We didn’t realise it at the time, but that’s all he could play in, was the key of C. I-IV-V in the key of C.”

@12:26, actually Ken, Handy has (kinda not) agreed to hand over his collection to me when he bites the dust.

Shuggie's version is the definitive one, and one of my favorite records of all time...thanks for playing this! Quincy had to call Lee Ritenour into the sessions for the Brothers Johnson version because no one could nail Shuggie's original guitar parts in that amazing outro. This record is perfection.

Hey folks. One of my very favorite 70’s singles. Was a mind-blower to have discovered after loving the Bros Johnson hit as a kid that there was this amazing prodigy named Shuggie Otis. Think I read somewhere fairly recently that he also played a bit with Zappa, on Peaches In Regalia or something, on bass. Played everything. Profoundly great artist.

@Zinn The Mood his dad is a legend, Johnny Otis (who is on that Shuggie record).

This 'I Can't Tell' not only tackles Hollies harmonies - but does what I always imagine: Rawking a great GittarPop tune up a bit more ...in my head, the early Who cover everything & on a good day too...

Oh, that's a good one. And "Psycho" is fine, of course. But it lacks that folkloric quality. That Appalachian-gothic feeling of the Louvins.

That lack of motivation is what makes them so compelling. Same thing with a lot of Shakespeare. The protagonists mistify us because it's not clear what drives them. (I was an English major with a B average.)

Public declaration: I'm disappointed that i missed out on tickets to the Linda Lindas at the Mercury Lounge. My 15-about-to-be-16-year-old daughter wanted to go.

They're also opening for 4 nights at Irving Plaza for Jawbreaker. I'm reluctant the spend so much money for a show where I only care about the opener. I didn't know anyone cared so much about Jawbreaker. Did they sell any records (well, CDs) for more than 50¢ in cutout bins?

I'm mean.

We can't get tix to Mercury Lounge except day-of since they deliver them ONLY through an app. Sucks.
