Today: On Elon Musk's Twitter takeover – with Paul Bradley Carr, author, 1414º

Paul Bradley Carr's newsletter

Paul Bradley Carr on Techtonic (Nov 15, 2021) talking about his novel 1414º

Twitter: to the loon! (by Paul Bradley Carr, April 7, 2022): “I’m out. I hard-deleted my verified account on Tuesday morning and also the 2FA so I can’t reactivate it during the grace period even if I wanted to. I’m a recovering addict, and I know when something is dangerously unhealthy. ... How was it? Well, it took me a full six hours to hear about the Will Smith Oscar slap vs six seconds for everyone else. I had to wait until 6am every morning to find out the latest covid rates or the death toll in Ukraine. For this terrible sacrifice of immediacy, I regained HOURS of my day.”

Elon and on (by Paul Bradley Carr, April 13, 2022): “This is a man who has made a career out of promising the earth (/Mars/the hyperloop/cave rescue pods/robot trucks) and then not quite delivering.”

• From McSweeney's, I like free speech so much I decided to buy it (by Eli Grober, Apr 26, 2022): “Hi there, I’m Elon Musk. I’m mostly known for rockets and cars, but what I really care about is free speech. I can’t get enough of it. In fact, I like free speech so much I’ve decided to buy it. That’s right, it turns out free speech isn’t free—it costs exactly $44 billion. That might sound like too much money for one person to be allowed to spend, but that’s only because it is. And I’ve decided free speech is worth the cost. I’m going to make sure some board full of rich guys doesn’t get to define what counts as free speech. Instead, just one rich guy will get to decide what counts as free speech: me.”

• Jack Dorsey weighs in on Elon Musk: “I trust his mission to extend the light of consciousness.” (Dorsey also linked to a Radiohead song.)

• Why NYT Book Review editor Pamela Paul left Twitter (Apr 28, 2022): “I left because I was terrible on Twitter. I may not have been the only one, but Twitter Me was petty, insecure, desperate to please, angry, narcissistic and needy.”

• Robin Sloan describes getting off Twitter: “The speed with which Twitter recedes in your mind will shock you. Like a demon from a folktale, the kind that only gains power when you invite it into your home, the platform melts like mist when that invitation is rescinded.”

• Charles M. Blow on his Twitter experience (May 1, 2022): “There were clear positives. But the negatives were real and grinding. Social media is full of hate speech, bots, vitriol, attack armies, screamers and people who live for the opportunity to be angry.”

• Edward Ongweso Jr pointing out in Vice that billionaires already own all of the media and platforms: “The world’s richest man will soon own Twitter. The second-richest man (Jeff Bezos) owns the Washington Post. ... Two of the 10 richest men (Larry Page and Sergey Brin) own Google. Mark Zuckerberg, one of the richest 20 men in the world, owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. ... There are, of course, alternatives we should aspire to, and they don’t include billionaires. ... there are an abundance of proposed models (public utilities, cooperatives, protocols, etc.) but that our options, at the moment, are limited to ‘broaden[ing] our conversations about how platforms should be designed, financed, and governed.’”

Good evening all! My husband & I love Techonic and have been waiting for tonight’s Twitter show! Is it OK to ask an off topic question here? My husband recently got locked out of his Yahoo email account and can’t get back in because he doesn’t have his cellphone anymore. (We both work from home in a rural area with spotty cell service at best so he had ditched his cell a few years ago.) But it’s getting to be that having a cellphone seems mandatory for things! Yahoo customer service has been a nightmare but we’re still hoping he can at least get back on to retrieve some important info. But can anyone here recommend a good (and free?) email service to start up again with? I know Google is out! What do you guys use?

@Dean@6:26, one of the whole points of Techtonic is that it doesn't matter if *you're* on Twitter or other social media driven by algorithmic promotion of hate, conflict, and polarization for profit -- what matters is that *society as a whole* is participating in it and being driven by these algorithms.

As much as we need to keep encouraging people to get off social media, there have to be regulatory changes as well. It's like plastic recycling - it's good that we do it, but we need to reduce the amount of plastic that is produced in the first place. The burden has to be shifted from end-users to producers, or we'll never see the necessary changes happen.

If Paul is correct that Twitter once was useful--I have my doubts, but I'll accept the premise--and if Twitter is now so unbearably exploitative, then why aren't people like Paul a least a smidgen hopeful that Musk could effect a change should he close the deal?

“Simply disengagement” is NOT the solution to the Twitter problem, or the other social media problems. The real answer is right in front of you guys and you’re missing it.

I might quite twitter if I get called "sheeple" too many times in a week, that's my threshhold. I can usually ignore seeing Bill Maher, James Woods, Joe Rogan, Piers Morgan etc trending at all times. It's just a matter of not taking the bait too much.

Discord is ... well, imbricate in the same Silicon Valley VC world as all the others, DanFA. It seems like a terrible method of communication, but then I think all social media seems like a mere pretense of communication. I use it just for in-game chat and record keeping for our D&D game since we went remote for the pandemic.

Glenn Greenwald has been hammering away at this fact, the routine ownership of social/news media by insanely wealthy people. I can only agree with him in this respect.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
Handy Haversack:

I tried for a while to participate in some maker communities there, DanFA, but eventually found it ... empty? Either empty or overloaded, I guess. And the channel format seemed just to make it impossible to organize conversations. But I have no real drive for communication outside pretty much what Franco just said. So I use it for some record keeping, and it's OK for that.

Elon’s blind spot is that he really has no idea how rapidly Twitter will become obsolete. He thinks he’ll be able to “innovate” his way out of that obsolescence. He’s overly confident about that. Blinded by his narcissistic character.

My absolute favorite social network was Google+.

No, not joking (even though a bunch of jerks made fun of it throughout its all too brief existence).

It was a beautiful place for long-form, nuanced conversations with remarkable belly-up-to-the-bar access to legendary tech figures.

“Inverted totalitarianism is different from classical forms of totalitarianism. It does not find its expression in a demagogue or charismatic leader but in the faceless anonymity of the corporate state. Our inverted totalitarianism pays outward fealty to the facade of electoral politics, the Constitution, civil liberties, freedom of the press, the independence of the judiciary, and the iconography, traditions and language of American patriotism, but it has effectively seized all of the mechanisms of power to render the citizenry impotent.”
