Genesis started out as a project by Jonathan King, the big 1960s UK recording mogul. He picked their name. They got a demo tape to him somehow through a friend. He was an alumnus of the prep school Charterhouse (kind of the Andover of the UK), where he original band members attended at that time.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
G:

@RR63: Interpersonal dynamics of groups are complicated, and often groups try to keep them in the shadows. Reading a lot about a group over the years, you can piece things together somewhat decently, often.

Genesis came from members of two Charterhouse "high-school" groups (one called Garden Wall). Two original members left early on, one to go to college, and one due to stage fright, if memory serves. So it was the three originals (Banks, Gabriel, Rutherford), plus Collins and Hackett hired in.

Banks was super bossy ("bloody minded" or stubborn was Gabriel's term, though not actually naming Banks, in an interview decades later). Banks would get Rutherford to agree with him about what to put on an album etc. etc., and then he only needed one more vote to get a majority and his way. Hackett and Collins felt like kind of outsiders/newcomers among these Charterhouse guys and didn't want to make too many waves, so Banks often got Gabriel outvoted, and got his own way. This despite the fact that Banks and Gabriel had been very very close early on.

So Gabriel sent solo in 75. Two years later, Banks and the group told Hackett he could not do any more solo work, even though they often did not accept his contributions for inclusion on albums. DRAMA!!! (There's a reason Yes used that as an album title near the end of their first run haha)

Eno: May 15, 1948
Fripp: May 16, 1946
Bruford: May 17, 1949 (8?)
Toya Wilcox: May 18, 1958
  4:21pm
Jon:

From the back of the cover:
"Danse Macabre" is a natural evolution from the first album "Esperanto Rock Orchestra".
The dramatic theme running though this second album reflects all aspects of Esperanto and shows a willingness to look for a definitive approach to contemporary music.
Much of this direction has come from Peter Sinfield, who has produced this album following work with King Crimson, ELP and PFM and his influence can be clearly heard throughout.
"Danse Macabre" does not require listening to and should not be played on speakers less than 8" in diameter, in airport lounges, elevators and at dinner parties or immediately after sexual congress.

Scott its like you are developing a thesis and Stereolab was the hypothesis. I LOVE Fripps work to be sure.
Avatar 5:11pm

That is - I picture Fripp as demanding & notoriously not loose, rather than actually ill-mannered. But I know nothing.

I recently bought an OPPO Blu-ray player and new Denon 7.2 receiver so I can finally listen to the collection of Steven Wilson 5.1 DVD-A remixes I have amassed over the years. It is difficult to find a player that handles that format. I'm usually a stereo type feller, but I'm looking forward to it.

Has anyone read the Lou Reed biography by Anthony DeCurtis that came out a couple years ago? I'm 3/4 thtough it right now. I'm really enjoying it. DeCurtis does not shy away from Lou's crappy treatment of others but it's definitely not a hatchet job by any means. I also appreciate the album by album discussion too.

I have driven by Lou's house in NJ. It has a long driveway and is in a very rural area. Well, rural for NW NJ that is. He used to visit the Shop Rite (or was it A&P?) in Blairstown and people who worked there were told to just be cool when he came in and do not comment on his fame at ALL.

Lou seemed like he was probably a WYSIWYG kind of guy. Laura A probably knew what she was getting into. And he couldn't possibly have been a d-bag 24 hours a day; only in certain situations, of the sort we all consider being unpleasant in, but decide not to be
