Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Hi Dave and Claire.. Really digging this alto show! I, too, started on alto. Always wanted to play Bari, but the HS band director said I was too small.

WR....the question was how long was bird on the planet...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
listener Rey:

Hi Dave & Claire. I heard it was the Doctor who examined him at his death that guessed Bird's age was 65.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm

Rey...you can't trust doctors...

Somethin' Else is such a gorgeous album. I recall decades ago hearing an early pressing at a stereo shop in San Diego on a top-notch system. Sublime.
Avatar 2:29pm

I fell in love with the baritone when I was 3-4 years old hearing Bennie Moten's "Moten Stomp" played by my grandmother on her wind up Victorola (a 78 for any kids out there). She never bought an electric record player. Used it til she died in 1984.

desert island great, dean.

@Dave and Claire: Do either of you know if the Bari solo on Moten Stomp was Jack Washington or LaForest Dent?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm
StringOFperils:

Yes, a big fat clean vinyl copy of this album is a treat to hear, and even to hold actually; it's kind of a fetish item
Avatar 2:32pm
neveract:

I play my copy of Something' Else at least once a week. Love hearing Miles' voice at the end of the take! lol
  2:35pm
Dean:

I have three copies of SE: an ordinary CD issue, a Mobile Fidelity "gold" CD issue, and a vintage (but not original) LP.
  2:36pm
Dean:

The only album of which I have more copies is Walt Dickerson & Sun Ra, Visions, another desert island great.
Avatar 2:36pm
neveract:

I have an orig pressing of SE, but rarely play it. I bought a Classic Records pressing back in 2003 or so for regular play.
