I had the same experience with Fela's band led by his son, Femi. This was September '84. Fela had been arrested at the airport in Nigeria, so the band left without him and attempted to carry on the U.S. tour without him. Because of the series of postponements and cancellations, the Fela show kept moving to smaller and smaller venues. When the NYC show finally got booked it took place, quite bizarrely, in the back of a mid-town lunchcrowd restaurant called Pizza a Go-Go. The stage area could barely hold the band. Not ever sure there was an actual stage. Only a few of Fela's queens had room to perform and were dancing with little inspiration off to the side. The show didn't start until after midnight and the sound system was amateurish. But it was a fucking monster show.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am
Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
I wouldn't call Rzewski's concert in the fish store "adverse." OK, the battered upright piano was maybe beneath his standards, but he was playing for the people, and I'm sure it was his honor to do so. Of course, many of them were just there to wolf down their fried haddock sandwiches...

The theme of your show might have been more appropriate back in August on National Go Topless Day, but toplessness is good to celebrate any time of the year.

There was no food served at night in that place. During the day it was a pizza-by-the-slice joint for mid-town office workers. At night, they pushed the few tables in the place over to one end and called it a "club."

AiT = Andrew is Topless!

Gotta go buy the dogfood. Thanks, DJ Jeff, for the most skin I've ever heard on FMU. See you at the Stork…

@Doug: I once went to a noise show in the basement of an African restaurant. The patrons were puzzled but friendly. It was a fun show, and best ginger juice ever!

Take care, @doc, and happy shopping, @adamdoesit!

You can see all these covers and hear the music at the new topless venue, Thoracic Park. (Inspired by @Dean.)
On that note, I find I have to go!

Bye, @LG! Thanks for being here.

@Jeff Golick
I'd like some ginger juice, please.

Dean:

"Sipping on ginger juice, laid back..." Snoop Doggy Dogg, right?

Uncle Michael:

Straight ginger juice? I buy it by the quart but can't imagine just drinking it straight. Is the beverage more nuanced than straight ginger juice?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am
Jeff Golick:

I actually think during this show some pledgers have clawed back their money from D:O Radio and reapportioned it elsewhere.

I googled. It is.

This Niagara cover, like so many above, is unfortunately exploitative even while being beautiful in its own way. Another record with a similar attraction to "the male [cis hetero] gaze" is this marvelous gamelan and ketjak performance: shorturl.at/lmP78
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah, that's...bold cover, too, @Dean.

Wow! Took a pre-show nap and woke to find all the skin - er, tunes that I missed! Nice list ;)
I see that Niagara got played - great underrated band with future-Passport drummer Udo Lindenberg.
