Hi Neil!
"Like stuff with like stuff" works to an extent, but still moves like a spectrum as sections gradually transition to each other. And Steeleye Span is kind of like Sandy & Fairport, but more psychedelic. An early type of "freak folk"!

Dear Matt-as a former record collector I always (mistakenly) believed that Steeleye Span was trying to cash in on selling records because of their proximity to Steely Dan....just like Pink Faeries was just before Pink Floyd....I had some strange ideas in my 20's! Freak Folk is pretty cool. Its noodly bits are really great flourishes. Almost Greek...the choruses are really great too.

Yes, good ol' Maddy Prior singing.
Pretty cool how their Latin Xmas chant "Gaudete" made UK #14 in Xmas '72.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...ferrets relatively skilled @ espionage however as it happens...

I think its a toss up with that one since the Beatles were such tight musicians and do damned good adn did the unexpected but WOW could the Beach Boys SING a tune. Few came close to that I have to admit. I liked the Stones textures such as in 10,000 light years from home, but I think the Beatles were just better musicians. Without Brian Jones I think their quality went down a notch or two.

Libraries upon Museums could, have & shall address TheBeatles. Re the albums & such - I emphasize these days that they worshipped both the Twin Gawds of Excellence & Change.
'When the Stones lost BrianJones they lost their rainbow.'
- Bob Brainen
I say BrianJones was both of the spiritual essence for the Stones & a millstone holding them back. So when he was gone - they ran far & fast - & are in fact still running - but where they went became progressively less relevant.

Like many, I seem to have been attracted to it in late adolescence, really blowing my mind and expanding frontiers of the potential of music. But without the really clear radio 'hit' (Hey Jude/Revolution was a separate single), I think the volume and the breathtaking exploration in the songs was just too much for some. Too much to make a quick summary or generalization.

@Matt: In 2009 with the Remasters box I made CD-Rs of the Beatles album for a job I had :
www.facebook.com...
CD-Rs are 80 minutes - & you know those 1960s Beatles albums are pretty short ! Their general thing was to not pad Albums with Hit Singles like everybody else. Cause Beatles. So I puts the Singles on with the Album of the same time - & I recommend that highly. As if listening to Albums was a thing anymore...
Avatar 🧩 Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Neil: True, at that age new sounds can be offputting, esp. if they "don't relate to you". By my 20s when I started listening to FMU, I realized that for many things: this can still be good! Even if I don't relate to it personally! But as a teen still feeling out your style and learning, I can see not enjoying something like that.

Avatar 🧩 Swag For Life Member 5:29pm

I still love the concept of albums, and it seems many artists still like to release them. But some have gone back to the 50s/60s method of just "a collection of singles", and in a digital iTunes (or worse, SPLOT-ify!) world, anyone can take individual tracks and sequence them however they prefer. Or even just "shuffle" them without any order!

@Matt-yeah I was really touchy about GENRES back then. If it wasn't the Who, Adam Ant or Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd (or a few others) I was really AGAINST it. Now FMU has taken the scales off my eyes and I can enjoy metal, black metal (maybe 1% of it) jazz, free jazz, "world music", weird al jankovic, Frank Sinatra.
I still think albums where the artist puts together a bunch of songs is the way to go. I always find a second or even third tier non-hit I LIKE on an ALBUM. Singles devolve into greatest hits collections which rob me of the experience of good-better-best of an artist.
Kiss had a real banger with Detroit Rock City. They had some good songs. Not many, but a few IMHO.

Good thoughts Neil. And yeah, the problem with singles, "hit singles" is that's practically a straight-line greatest hits collection, from one era to another. I'm glad FMU digs out deep cuts for artist tributes, "greatest hits" are about the worst way to summarize someone's life and career.

@RRN63: "White Album" w/ singles added - good thinking exercise. Something the "White Album" Institute of America could have as a short essay question!

A basic solution (w/o Anthology or WA session tracks) would be to introduce the 1968 Beatles: introduce with "Lady Madonna"/"The Inner Light", about to go off to India, tell the story of the trip and it's aftermath, go to the "Revolution 9"/"Good Night" finale, and if they've stuck around that long, a "Hey Jude"/"Revolution" encore!

@Matt: Pretty much what I did with those CD-Rs exactly. Like if Pepper is all Production & no Songs (I don't quite agree with that) - consider it's framed in time with StrawberryFields / PennyLane on one side (Best Single Ever??) - & 'All You Need Is Love' on the other. Just as - yerknow - 'Let It Be' was supposed to be such a disaster - & it's actually them setting themselves all these tasks they'd never done before to accomplish in One Month. Cause - Beatles.

Liverpool in the North (laughingly dubbed 'the Capitol of Ireland') - & London in the South. Yoko observed John liked NYC cause it was a huge Liverpool - dock town, combo of Arty & Street.
