I thought that was the case, but my initial idea as to why he'd play guitar without a pick was that maybe I misremembered, and he played bass with his fingers.
I play bass, and I'm a finger player, and I'm really uncomfortable with a pick. I play uke with my fingers, and I can play guitar a little, but never in front of people, because I'm horrible with a pick.
