Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from January 20, 2023 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I rarely go on the Twitter. When I bounced there from a news story link the other day, I also saw a clip of a guy doing a very competent job of repairing a small bit of crumbling concrete walkway at a commercial location. I'd seen the same clip earlier the same day in a subreddit I'm not sure I'd ever been on before. In the ungraspable vastness of internet clip universe, I see the same modest concrete repair...twice within a couple hours. And I'm not sure it was because one site decided -- "knew" -- I'd clicked on it elsewhere.
It's hinky.

ScreamingTrees featured Vocalist & Songwriter Mark Lanegan. They were the Seattle 90s band that didn't hit as huge as many - yet beloved of some of us. Heavy somewhat Metallic sound - gruff downcast vocals & themes - with notable GarargePsych points of reference as well.

“It is with a deep and profound sadness that I learned that my friend David Crosby has passed. I know people tend to focus on how volatile our relationship has been at times, but what has always mattered to David and me more than anything was the pure joy of the music we created together, the sound we discovered with one another, and the deep friendship we shared over all these many long years,” Nash wrote. “David was fearless in life and in music. He leaves behind a tremendous void as far as sheer personality and talent in this world. He spoke his mind, his heart, and his passion through his beautiful music and leaves an incredible legacy. These are the things that matter most. My heart is truly with his wife, Jan, his son, Django, and all of the people he has touched in this world.”

-Graham Nash, who at the time of Crosby's death, had not made peace with his old friend (I believe)

If David Crosby had only sung the high harmony on the BYrdS' 'Bells of Rhymney'
...or clued them into Coltrane, so they brought Jazz-inspired improvisation into Rawk enabling all of Psychedelia
...or, familiarized George Harrison with Ravi Shakar, initiating his entire interest in things Eastern
...or presented Joni Mitchell

When that David Crosby album first came out, Rolling Stone did a cover story. The interviewer asked David about Jerry Garcia's input. This is what he said: "Man, that dude has a third eye!" My sister and I fell over laughing. We loved them both, but David could be a bit much. Rest in peace in David, you were one of a kind.

Interesting selections for your opening set, Uncle Michael! I have been down with COVID here in lovely Miami. A recent "cold snap" didn't help any, but I am getting a little better day by day. Yes, we lost Cros and Jeff Beck recently. Sadness hovers over the pop music world. I would like to put in a mention of another passing, that of Jerry Blavat, "the Geator with the Heater," long-time Philadelphia DJ, whom I enjoyed during my college years at Penn. A white guy working at a "black" station, but nonetheless, loved and respected for his enthusiasm and knowledge within the radio community for many years. RIP, "Geator."

Many of us here are getting there, buddy. I whistled past the boneyard 4 years ago fighting the big C, and I think going through that changed my perspective a bit; best not to get maudlin about everything, OR terrorized by everything, as strange as it is to see things passing into time and/or falling into darkness. If nothing else, we get to be in here and this is deluxe. It's still a beautiful world even though it's truncated by mystery.

Unca Mike, please show your well-known professionalism and savvy by making sure you pronounce "coup de grace" correctly. French "gras," meaning "fat," has the silent "s," But the expression, "coup de grace," in this case, sounds the final word as almost a perfect rhyme with English "grass." It's OK, a very common error. BTW, can anyone blame Captain Beefheart for emulating the vocal stylings of Howlin' Wolf. What a great role model!
