Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from February 3, 2023 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

The Dutch mathematician Christiaan Huygens first discovered the flanging phenomenon in 1693. Who invented phase shift?
This form of modulation was developed by the American electrical engineer Edwin H. Armstrong during the early 1930s in an effort to overcome interference and noise that affect AM radio reception. Les Paul's supposed to have found a way to do it as an effect in recording music in the 40s, and the first hit song with a very discernible flanging effect was "The Big Hurt" (1959) by Toni Fisher.__WIKI etc

I think Beck's voice has character - but yeah limited range & power. I rather think if a Beck or Hendrix were more confident in their voices - they might not have been driven to be the Greatest Gittarists Ever. One writer observed JeffBeck was in fact really like a Singer who happened to use the Gittar to do it with.

The Small Faces had a sense of humour, something lacking in many 'serious' bands. 'Ogdens' with Stanley Unwin is good fun.

And they also had the Music Hall sensibility most widely associated with The Kinks and some Beatles material. Not surprising, Marriott having been a lad that trod the boards.

Interesting idea about Jimmy Page maybe seeing a model vocalist/persona in Rod Stewart while cooking up a future band concept. The Faces had to have been circling around in his (and/or Robert Plant's) skull too at some point, because Robert Plant's delivery of "you need schoolin', baby I'm not foolin'" is directly lifted from Steve Marriot in 'You Need Loving' from 1966. It's plainly there.

I had three station wagons, all the same color - beige. Two Volvos and a Toyota Landcruiser. Get rid of one, my landlord demanded. The 1964 Volvo had to go. I put an ad in The Recycler, which hit the street on Thursday afternoon. I saw the ad at Milt's Liquor Store on the corner. As soon as I got home the phone rang. It was an English guy. I gave him directions from West Hollywood to Pasadena. No sooner than I put the phone down there was a pounding on the front door. Hansom and suntanned with a long shag haircut, he told me he shipped vintage European cars back across the pond. He wanted my car sight unseen. We hopped in his Triumph ragtop and went to the bank to get a pile of cash. We were inking the transfer on my dining room when he looked at my records in the living room. "Do you have anything by The Rolling Stones?" (He was leading me the nose, I suspect.) "Sure!" I pulled them out. "I designed the cover on that one." "What else did you design?" "The logo for Immediate Records." "Anything else?" 'I was the road manager for Emerson, Lake and Palmer." I though about this for a minute as he looked at me with a a mischievous grin. "I remember reading something in Rolling Stone about Emerson, Lake and Palmer using their road boxes to move large amounts of heroin while on tour in Asia. You don't happen to know anything about that, do you?" He rubbed his chin and said 'Funny, I remember hearing something about that." He told me he would be sending a flatbed with a winch to get the car.

There you go, my car was a mule. Used to get large amounts of a certain substance that was hard to find in Europe, but plentiful over here - cocaine perhaps?

Of course this is just idle speculation.
