True story when we first came to New Zealand in 2005 we were in a taxi and the driver a very prim & proper gent asked if we had "heard about the murder" which of course struck us as odd coming from the US. So we got to talking and I asked him if police carried guns in New Zealand. "Guns!" he gasped "They're our friends! They're here to help us! They're not here to shoot us!"

Another true story my wife is Russian and we were in JFK airport when a Russian young lady maybe age 25 or so approached my wife and asked directions. Her first time ever outside Russia. Turned out we were both headed uptown so we took the train together. This was around the time when Pussy Riot first came on the scene. So I asked her (or asked my wife to ask her since she spoke no English) what she thought of Pussy Riot. Her response was to inform us not to believe any of that. That there is a special committee in Russia that manufactures fake news for the rest of the world and that only Russians get the real news.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the US did bomb Nord Stream 2. The Russians definitely had no interest to. In my opinion, it was completely unnecessary, as Germany wasn’t going to use it anymore. Typical American overreach. The EU should take it as a warning; it’s high time they invest in gaining more actual independence from the US. Having said all that, the pipeline should absolutely never have been built in the first place. On another note, I read the Hersch interview on DemocracyNow, and imo he is very naive about Putin/underestimates the danger of Russia as the neo-fascist state that it already is. Chomsky seems out of his depth on this topic too, siding w Kissinger of all people and completely oblivious to Ukraine’s rights as a state/the interests of the Ukrainian people. Oddly, Zizek seems the voice of reason when it comes to that conflict.

Re: Chomsky, he’s mostly (imo, of course) very insightful on the situation. What bothers me is his insistence on the talks back in April having been torpedoed by the US, when in fact Russia was not putting anything reasonable on the table/not negotiating in earnest. That and his agreeing w Kissinger that the Ukraine should cede territory to end the conflict; that’s just not up anyone but Ukraine. I expect better from a self-proclaimed anti-imperialist.

Yes. Very simplistic. But his take is not unique. Anyway, the world turned a blind eye toward Putin's invasion of Georgia and his takeover of Crimea, not to mention his helping of Assad in Syria. This war doesn't happen if more had been done -- ideally without bombs -- earlier.

I don’t think so, morphe. I think they’re trying to have several sides represented. Their guests w pacifist views have just not been very credible; imo. Recently they invited a fairly obscure Kurdish-German politician from Die Linke, for example, whose position was basically to blame everything on the US. Now, I also think the „West“ has a lot to answer for when it comes to Russia‘s descent into fascism, but she just very clearly could not back up her arguments with anything factual/hadn’t a clue about the history of the conflict. Really made me wonder why she had been invited in the first place.
