"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. He pulls the yellow Karmann Ghia to the curb and kills the lights.
Beyond the passenger side window, a chainlink fence. Beyond the fence, nothing save for clusters of trash trees and rivulets of weeds pushing through the cracked pavement.
"Disco Kroger. I miss you," he mutters as he places the joint between his lips.
A single match is removed from its pocket worn book. Two remain. He strikes once and the match is lit.
The match is brought up. And then... Paused.
Above the healthy puttering of the Volkswagon's 50 year old engine, the sound of another vehicle. Repetitively gunning. All muffler.
The joint is lit, match tossed to the floorboard. He pulls hard and smoke fills his lungs.
"Fabio. You found me," Don says.
