Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from June 27, 2023 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

The band grew out of the ashes of Dabney Coleman Knifefight, and afterwards, sort of grew into Gordon Taylor, a Portland band I really, really loved. There has to be a drag Bon Jovi cover band with that name, or there is something deeply wrong with America.

I was watching a crappy movie where a thirty something woman goes to a high school graduation party and is appalled by the lack of drinking and sex, and the fact that the parents were actually present at the party. She gets cancelled in the scene...

I am shocked by how close parents are with their kids these days. Certainly, not all parents. But I see much closer relationships between parents and kids now, than existed when I was a kid.

I sold beer at some Dead and Co. Shows, as well as Phish shows. Fun people. I would rather stick pins into my finger pads than to listen to the music though. Rather listen to Jimmy Buffett. Cheeseburger in paradise city 🍔 where the grass is green and the girls are pretty darn tootin

I second that, Austin! It's great! But it seems so different to me. What? Parents listen to their kids and take them seriously? What world is this?!

A college friend basically forced me to go see Phish when they played on campus. It was excruciating for me. They played Sweet Home Alabama and I breathed a sigh of relief at the break from the jam. That show was not for me and I should not have been made to go!

Have you read that book by the NPR reporter, who followed Juggalos, and Phish, and draws a comparison between their audiences? It was fascinating.

Can't remember exactly, And it depends on what counts. Three-day gigs count as one, or three? What about the time I couldn't get a ticket until it was mostly over? How about when they pumped the music outside so I just stayed outside? But I'll just guess and say about 10.

I haven't! I should! I also feel like ICP isn't a fit for me but I do better with clowns than jam bands, that's for sure. And I am fuzzy on how magnets actually work.

You poor thing! I do not like Sweet Home Alabama, but I tell you what, I do like Free Bird. I had never listened to Free Bird before until I was on a aeroplane sitting next to a priest, who played Free Bird in his head phones. I did like that song upon hearing it.

But yes I am no fan of Phish. I have worked two concerts of theirs. One was shortly after Bernie Worrell of Funkadelic died. They did do a long form funk jam and I still hated it. Boy I tell you what. Dirty devils.

The connection is that both bands are critically hated, both bands have huge drug scenes, and both bands have massive audiences that essentially exist outside of the rest of the music scene.

I appreciate that the Frontier Gentleman rarely kills anyone, but BEATS THE HELL out of bad guys regularly, then forces them to atone for their sins. It's pretty badass.

I worked in the same room of a haunted house as ICP when they made a guest appearance. They seemed to like me. They trashed the place. I think like twenty kids were arrested for spraying faygo everywhere.

It was bad.... I'm sorry you endured, as well! I will confess a soft spot for Free Bird. And Free Falling.

Maybe I'll become a Jugalette in my dotage? I'll have to develop a taste for faygo. Maybe if I mix it with enough gin. Er, moonshine, still around the campfire, many pardons, yall.

I sold beer at a Tom Petty concert too. He played entirely radio hits. I had no idea that man had so many hits. All of them were almost on the tip of my tongue due to repetition, despite lack of interest.
