Here's the project in question: Annotated translation of a regional history of southwest China, completed ca. 350 CE. Fourteen chapters. Some geographic in focus, others political histories, and the rest biographical. Manuscript is over 1200 pages (double-spaced, including original Chinese text), with 5000+ footnotes. The task at hand is to separate those notes into three separate notestreams (1. footnotes that clarify the translation, 2. endnotes that discuss textual issues, 3 supplemental notes that contain all 5000+ notes of citation, commentary, etc for scholarly readers). Fun times!

	4:30pm prof.fuzz: ↳ love2laf @4:27 technically, "mandarin" is a spoken language. the text is in literary sinitic (aka "classical chinese"), which was the standard written language up until the 20th century. sorta the "latin" of east asia (japanese "kanji" are "hanzi chinese script; and korea used literary sinitic for all official writing up to the 19th century). it can be read aloud in mandarin, cantoneese, or any other spoken dialect, including korean or japanese, and the meaning remains the same.
