Back in the ‘80s/‘90s, I was very tight with the people who ran the Arts at St Ann’s (Brooklyn Heights). I was always pitching ideas for shows. I have usually thought that "freak folk" began with Donovan Leitch or maybe Incredible String Band. But a version of 'She Moves Through The Fair' by Odetta with Bill Lee on bass (1963) is possibly earlier freakyness. Listen to the odd notes Odetta and Lee throw in at points. It's subtly psychedelic or free jazzy. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about as I'm not a trained musician. But listen.

I saw Ravi Coltrane last night-I expected some influence from his dad, John, but it was almost like hearing the Coltrane Quartet! He did some Coltrane tunes (Giant Steps, Expressions), had a vocalist come up for a version of Lush Liife. Intense, mid-period Trane sound. (speaking of talented families).. I was mixed in how I felt about it (but hey, so many sax players had to pass through Trane, you'd expect Ravi to have to).
