I'm glad we're talking about P.B., cause I got a book called "Peter Bogdanovich's Movie Of The Week" recently. It's 52 essays on classic movies, with a suggestion to watch one every week.
Pretty sure he just dictated this book, it's full of chatty stories like "I was talking to Orson Welles the other day and he said early Lewis and Martin were so funny you'd piss your pants". The suggestions are great, though, and this week I watched one: Alfred's Hitchcock's amazing, wonderful North By Northwest. A top 5 movie for me.

I remember in the early '90, looking for copies of a couple of Neil Young LPs that were out of print at the time. I felt lucky to find them for about $10 each, when decent copies of in-print (on CD) LPs were $2-5.

$10 was about the price of a new LP at the time.

According to my inflation calculator. $10 in 1990 is $24 now. $30 now was $13 in 1990.

If you want to know the real value of vinyl records especially good titles from the 60's and 70's, try to sell them to a dealer. They'll offer less than a buck a piece then the same albums often show up for 20-30 in the shop for the kids under 20 to buy. I get commerce and paying the bills but it's hilarious just the same

When you sell your collection to dealers, you're essentially paying for the convenience of them taking it all off your hands in one fell swoop. If you want to get what it's truly worth, you gotta sell it piece by piece, which depending on the size of your collection can be both time consuming and inconvenient.

The moral of the story is to not sell your records! Play them, enjoy them, and cherish them!

I'm guessing that this is partly because a cassette can be made quicker and cheaper than a vinyl LP, and CDs (even quicker and cheaper to make) are un-cool.

And in real life, face it, you probably play the mp3 download, not the LP or cassette anyway. They could sell you a Taylor Swift chunk of wood, and it would sound exactly the same as a cassette.

Three classics! The Narrow Margin is one of my favorites, people talk about the fight scene aboard a train in From Russia With Love as one of the best, but Narrow Margin had it down years prior. I usually get some kind of physical media when ordering from Bandcamp, both to give them a little more money ad to help them clear out that big box of physical media in the closet.

I've harped on this enough but I don't get paying thirty bucks for a reissue on labels like Yep-Roc and they sound like second generation cassettes...not cool. I also picked up that beautiful looking Velvet Crush vinyl edition of Teenage Symphonies and it just sounds like crap.

I don't upgrade all of my dvds to Bluray unless there are great extras or if the original dvd didn't look that great, but I've updated a few. I get films from overseas companies and many of them only make blu-rays. I do stream, but sometimes they picture is unwatchable. I just bought a blu-ray for Born To Win (1971) because the streaming version and old dvd version both looked like mud.

In the late 90's there was a scene especially among underground punk and hardcore bands where they were still releasing on cassettes, total DIY. Then cassette players stopped being manufactured widely, CD's became cheaper to make, etc. But about ten years ago there was a buzz that cassettes were coming back in underground circles, and now it's mainstream and teenagers I know are fascinated by them. It's crazy, but for people releasing music still very cost effective. I still like CD's too.

I don't know the details, but based on the YR vinyl I do own, this seems to check out. They're not the only ones though. Plenty of labels are getting their stuff pressed at crappy plants. It's really just the lack of quality control that's the issue. I know the demand is high and that the plants are slammed and probably working around the clock, but jeez, even the slightest effort to improve the pressing quality would go a long way in 2023.

In my experience, off-center pressings are the biggest blight on vinyl today.

I've heard a lot of complaints especially regarding deluxe box sets about the quality of the pressings on new vinyl. And the pressing plants are backed up like mad with demand, I forget what the turnaround time is for short runs but it's very long. I think the demand overshot the actual capability of people who can run and maintain the equipment. I have to think a lot of the craftsmen who ran the equipment and knew how to do it are gone by now and it's hard to run the presses to meet demand today

As far as I know, test pressings are readily available should you choose to want them pressed. But I don't know if they measure anything more than the sound quality of the pressing. I think a lot of the other issues occur during the pressing run of the album. For instance, I've had off-center pressings that I've exchanged for another copy that was pressed well. Same with non-fill.
