Favoriting September 6, 2023: Musician of the Generations: Mohamed Abdel Wahab
So fierce was singer, musician, and composer Mohamed Abdel Wahab, Egyptian diva Oum Kalthoum refused for decades to work with him, fearing he’d upstage her. When the two finally collaborated, they produced several of Kalthoum’s greatest songs, including Enta Omri, Fakarouni, and Laylet Hob. This tribute focuses on rare 45s, LPs, and cassettes of Abdel Wahab’s own recordings, with a few covers and songs written for others woven in.

see, that's where I'm at a disadvantage, i have no idea about what are lyrics (when in english). there are western traditions in folk, work songs, sea shanties, etc that filtered down to choruses in pop music....(of course for me, folk encompasses the vernacular of all ethnic heritages)

One thing that impresses me with much of the Egyptian music that Gary plays is the performance of the orchestra (strings, I guess), which is in unison and never seems to mess up. Those parts don't seem that easy to me.

Earlier today there was an anti-Phil Spector remark on one of the boards. I respect that opinion. One wishes All Things Must Pass were not a George Harrison/Phil Spector album, in a way. But I think Spector was a musical boon to the Beatles and to Harrison. Those achievements were and remain splendid. Much like the strings that accompany Egyptian music.

In the movie of The Band's Visit, the orchestra plays like that, in perfect unison, sharp (from what I remember-saw it many years ago). The Broadway show didn't catch the same feeling.

To be fair - Recording a Rawk~Pop Band & their often hysterical Audience - Live - was still a technical challenge then. Too much of one, for the most part. So trying to document it a bit artificially was an obvious route...

Wow, you can get the LP for twenty bucks off Discogs. But you know what? Cookies piss me off. Increasingly, more websites want to invite me to "choose" a cookies setting.

Thank you, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Steve Jobs, and all of the rest of the IEEE monsters, dead or alive, who have imposed this on me.

The worst is sites (like Discogs) that keep asking you to choose cookies. I suspect that if you choose the "wrong" ones, they keep asking you to confirm every time you return, until you say, "WHATEVER! JUST STOP BUGGING ME!" and then they load up every cookie onto your plate.

You're too kind to them, LG. I suspect that they are, like most technologists, ordinary and stupid. There are very, very few "tech savvy" folks among us.

They behave differently on different sites, though. Some you can say NO to the cookie, and continue to do what you came to do. Others kick you off if you don't accept the cookies. Maddening indeed!

As long as they don't keep asking me over and over, I won't complain too much.

the sound artist, jasmine guffond, offers this extension, that allows you to know when tracking cookies are attached to any page you're visiting (also, makes for fun sonic web surfing!!). chrome.google.com... (yes, it's chrome supported, but it eliminates chrome cookie trackers as well)

I use DuckDuckGo's tracking, which is respectable. But bottom line I can't know without spending more time than I have exploring it.

I wish law were not where we will end up having to solve these issues. I wish our tech gurus would have exhibited half a brain of forethought and moral deliberation. But they didn't, and plainly they won't.
