A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I don't totally buy the reconsideration of disco. As a kid then, i remember how it was freakin EVERYWHERE. And so much of it was awful. The record biz sent out the memo that EVERYONE had to make a disco record, no matter how inappropriate it was. Fred Astaire, Sinatra, The Beach Boys, each new record worse than the last. It pushed aside rock, and pretty much everything else off the radio or clubs. You think radio was playing THIS stuff?

i compiled some of my fave bad disco on WFMU's old blog. now it's funny. Back then, not so much.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:41pm

the anti-black and gay thing is also a bit of a myth. Soul and funk was hugely popular. if anything, black audiences resented funk being appropriated by whites. The Black power message of funk replaced with, y'know, "boogie oogie oogie." And the complex African-derived funk rhythms replaced by a thump-thump-thump beat so simple even white people could follow it.

Anti-gay? You're gonna laff, but most people had no idea how gay disco was. Gay culture was so out of the mainstream, Middle America thought that "YMCA" was about, well, the YMCA. in any case, Glam Rock was much more explicitly gay, and it was really popular.

ladies and gentlemen of the court, i rest my case. *sits down*

After I did the "Punk on Punk" show, I almost followed it with a "Punk on Disco" show. But I would have had to really stretch the premise to fill two hours. STILL, I was astonished at how much there was out there, of punk bands singing about disco. It certainly ignited something in the punk scene.

Yeah, I've bought records for feeling they deserve better than to sit overlooked in a used record bin. Have you ever bought a record, know you're the one who traded it in???

Austin Rich:

I usually buy any copy I see of "Disney's Haunted House" LP, because they are always cheap, and sometimes I can find a better cover / sleeve / record for the one I have. And: everyone should have one, so they are easy to give away.

Here's my dark secret: I've never sold records. I sold CDs once, and was so disappointed with the return - even in trade - that I haven't tried selling anything else I own since.

Austin, when should we and Heather get together for our next recording?

I once bought CDs at a local shop, knowing they were the ones stolen from my car. Yikes!

No, but I do regret some records I sold ~ 30 years ago (old Einsturzende Neubauten and Cabaret Voltaire)

↳ Song: "Black Sabbath" by "Dayglo Abortions"
The song is about the band... but the band is named after the movie, so I fudged on this one.

i'm selling my records now only because i need the space.
the money's sometimes good; and i like that my beloved records are going to someone who really wants them, but i wish i could keep them.
