Not that great in 74. Huge streets with few cars. Hotel was shared bathroom and communal shower room at ends of halls. You knew what soup would be for lunch the next day b/c it was chopped up dinner leftovers.

Iron no longer! Though, it is interesting to visit places that were once behind it. I've been to Poland, Slovenia, places in the former East Germany. And when visiting Berlin, go over to Alexanderplatz and Karl-Marx-Allee or further - provides an interesting contrast with the western part of the city.

Sounds about right. Your hotel was probably at least less dense than the "communal apartments" most city-dwellers had (and still rely on in some places in the FSU).

"Intertourist" and shops with similar names around the Eastern bloc, where visitors could buy the country's finer products and third-country imports at a price lower than in the West. But Party members in good status were the only domestic customers allowed to buy from those.
