Given the mean {working life-time} of a W.W.I. fighter-pilot, about two months as I recall it, I can't see _not_ being a least a little drunk doing it, though the flushing would worsen the oxygen level for the brain.

According to "Blitzed", a book mostly about Nazi methedrine encouragement, the British tested methedrine-, dexedrine-, and cocaine-assisted pilots, and found that dexedrine had the best {reaction-time–improvement}/{errors-in-judgement} ratio—I forget how caffeine factored into it. Allied ground-troops had 'energy pills', which I remember as being dexedrine, caffeine, and glucose.

A Vietnam vet claimed to me that every time they went out on patrol they were given speed of one sort or another, and when they got back they got downers.

I'm waiting to see someone develop vacuum-filled cubes with light but incredibly sturdy walls coated so as to avoid near-immediate filling by diffusion through the walls, with which to fill airships—'Cavorite' would be a good trade-name.

Charles Stross has a book where everyone in Britain playing a L.A.R.-P. spying game has actually signed-up to work for a real spy-service, and has assented to the Official Secrets Act—it's all there in the E.U.L.A. agreement, ten-out-of-fifteen pages in.

Merv Griffin[thanks, Milk&Cheese]'s trumpet-player was Jack "I'm Just a Bill" Sheldon, who was a running-buddy of Lenny Bruce's, and according to Albert Goldman did _lot_ of heroin with him and participated in weird[-to-many] sex-scenes with him and Honey Harlow.

It would be amusing to me if Griffin were as gay as sometimes alleged, as I had an older relative who was as notable a fan of his as they were an homophobe…though that situation would hardly be unique, I doubt lots of the women and girls drooling over Liberace would seem reasonably tolerant today.

Have thot Hearty = flipside same coin as Joe Frank. Then again ...as Bob Dobbs for a subsequent Age Cohort. But that's another potential essay (involved if not entirely serious)... Have also thot maybe Hearty was the answer to Joseph Campbell's proposed evolutionary dilemma of our Knowledge changing too quickly for us to form a sufficient Story. Hearty has more or less logically refuted that...
Also ...there is a Buddhist podcast called Audio Dharma which often bares some comparison to Hearty, matter of fact. But of course Hearty is way more Fun...

According to "Blitzed", Guderian and the rest of his tank corps were so blitzed on methedrine (trade-name, 'Pervitin') that they went a lot further than they were supposed to have done, which only worked because of the betrayal of the French government by the Right.

("Blitzed" also has a great portrait of Dr Morell, a 'Dr Feelgood' who won Hitler's lasting gratitude by curing the Führer's terrible flatulence, using probiotics. Morell wanted to become the Gland King of Central Europe, and the end of the war found him stuck in Bohemia with train-cars filled with rotting animal adrenals, pancreasuses, and probably some pineals and testicles.)

There's a pretty awesome clip of Screamin' Jay on Merv's show on you tube. Merv does the obligatory "this guy is so crazy" thing but in a way that kind primes the audience to give him a chance. I'm cool with Merv, plus Trump hated him.
