COLUMBIA Records studio approach might factor into it too. Just listen to the Monk albums on the label. I like them, but they sound rather contained/sanitized for a - perceived - much larger, major-label market. The live stuff, at the time, might have been allowed to run wild a lot more.

I've always been aware of what I thought was an unorthodox possessive--bitches instead of bitch's--which made brew a noun. But it's more likely the title is a complete sentence: those bitches are brewing [something].

StringOFperils:

Miles in the late 60s must have been in conflict with production frequently. They're concerned with marketing, so hearing tapes of what would be near unintelligible to them at times would have been like watching their investment tossed onto a bonfire. So goes art-marking. Some people are still catching up with Impressionism.

I told this before-but my jazz introduction was a college course given by Chuck Israels (played bass with Bill Evans). Report: I went to Mass MoCA on Friday, where (among many other things) I saw a show by jazz pianist Jason Moran. There were two things of interest. The first was some kind of print that he made that was meant to capture the motion of playing the piano. I believe he put paper and some transfer material inside the piano. The results didn't look bad, but each print had a row of little rectangles, which seemed to reflect the piano hammers hitting strings, which really does not capture the motion or sound of a piano, IMHO. Except for color, they were all essentially the same thing.

The second item was a project Moran has to reconstruct significant places where the music has played. At MoCA, he had versions of the Savoy Ballroom stage and also Studio Rivbea. Ravi Coltrane is at the Vanguard, NYC (last shows tonight). Saw him at Birdland not too long ago, good show (very much his dad's son).

And also, this captures the feel of the original well. And the intended meaning which shan't be whitewashed out.
