The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

"In 1948, Moses Asch founded Folkways Records with a self-proclaimed mandate to record the sounds of the entire world. From the Sounds of North American Frogs to Speech After the Removal of the Larynx, Folkways documented the audible nooks and crannies of existence on hundreds of LPs produced by field recordists, scientists, and experimentalists probing the margins of the human soundscape. Seventy-five years later, electronic music duo Matmos have diced, looped, stretched, and recontextualized these recordings on their new album Return to Archive, which was assembled entirely from the so-called non-musical sounds released on Folkways. On just the album’s first track, dolphins, beetles, telephones, humans stretching the limits of their vocal cords, a shortwave radio, and metal balers co-mingle in a fantasia of sound both everyday and extraordinary. We had Indian takeout for pre-thanksgiving. I still have a fridge full of chicken masala and a bunch of thali sides.

Thanks. It did the trick. And now I have to make two grilled cheese sandwiches for my daughter and her friend who will stay over tonight. I have cheeses here that would make Wendy proud.

The most vulgar thing? The Apple iPhone has to be vying for the top spot.

I worked in a public library when Madonna's book of naked photos appeared. We pondered whether or not to buy it. There was demand, but the book was pricey and controversial. The first factor is legit, the second not so much. We declined to buy it. The whole time I'm thinking, "Has anybody bothered to wander into the fiction stacks, say, where Philip Roth's Sabbath's Theater is shelved? That book is so sublimely filthy, much like The Mentors. Nobody gives a shit, in part because they're too stupid to give one. But OMG MADONNA NAKED HOLY SHIT!

That book was like the Wal Mart of fetish photography pushing even relatively glossy stuff like Eric Kroll right out of the way...

my ex worked in Public Library around that time. I recall the bruhaha about that, especially since we live in a rather conservative county.
