As for Swiss music, I hope somebody on FMU (Mandl, perhaps?) will play Flame Dream, a Swiss band that hired a pal from the '80s who lived in Downey, CA, to play guitar. He, Dale Hauskins, was heavy into Holdsworth and Hillage, and he brought that tenor to Flame Dream's music.

A recent review in the NYT of two books, a collection of poetry by Anthony Hecht, and a biography of Hecht takes issue with his devotion to "formalism." Evidently, formalism is old-fashioned, and Hecht's legacy suffers due to this fact, because we no longer respond to form, to rules, to technicalities. I'm puzzled. Witness the discussion here of the specifics of sampling. Why is it significant that X sampled A before Y? Why that X's sample is "technically" not a sample?

We remain entirely formalist, entirely devoted to rules, and I can't envision how we ever will not be so disposed.

Thanks for the review. Have you (or anyone) heard of a jazz trio called Ember? They are playing not-very-locally tomorrow, and I'm trying to decide if they're worth the night driving. Only member I've heard of is Vinnie Sperrazza on drums.

Where in MA? Maybe it's close to where Ember is playing.

Thanks. It's not close to me but is on my way in to Boston, so maybe I can stop on my next trip there.
