I see Andrew in Toronto posted Essra Mohawk’s obituary. I really dug her and had some email correspondence with her during the pandemic. Her 2nd album, Primordial Lovers, is a (largely unheard) classic. She’s been accused of coping Laura Nyro’s sound, and, as a result, Essra expressed some bitterness towards Laura (which I thought was WAY off base). But, she felt someone sabotaged her at Reprise and thought it might’ve been Joni Mitchell. Who knows? Reprise hardly promoted that album and then dropped her like a stone. Totally out of character for a company that prided itself on its roster of non-commercial yet artistically rich artists.

Jeff:

Hey Bob, when you think about it, in the late ‘60s/early ‘70s, they were few and far between. One absolutely ridiculous thing Essra said to me was that Laura came to see the Mothers at the Garrick in the summer of ‘67 and was influenced by whatever Frank allowed Essra to do on stage that night. I think Laura played Monterrey before that Mothers run at the Garrick ever happened. Regardless, Essra Mohawk/Sandy Hurvitz was a talented artist in her own write/right? Urban Jewish soul girl singer/songwriter geniuses like Essra and Laura should be cherished by us all and each other.

I was talking to a friend who's exactly the same age, who is also a collector. He had a moment of clarity and realized all his records will never be more valuable than they are now, so he was thinking of getting rid of everything.

I'm not sure I believe him. I think he was just having a reaction to yet another friend who still spends lots of time in the record store.

He saw himself reflected in a mirror, and didn't like what he had become.

It's not a bad thought, who knows if LPs will continue to be sought after by the kids for very long, or if they'll price themselves out of a desirable range (my ability to predict future trends, such as real estate prices, has been extremely bad...). But, if one sells them to a dealer/store, you get pennies on the dollar of the value of the albums (since the dealer wants to resell them at a profit). And, if one wants to sell them individually, which is the way to maximize the return on them, one has to basically set up a business, get shipping boxes, invest a lot of time, rate the albums on condition, basically close to another full time job, if it goes well...

Interesting to hear the George tunes, Tomorrow Never Knows and Love You Two come together, especially the latter, which started off with just acoustic guitar backing and an almost tuneless melody, and got to the sitar and melody that it wound up with.

Mixed about it snowing-sure, it is the natural, pre-warming state of things, but I SOOOO hate the snow clearing...

After 18 years on top of Lake Superior followed by 6 years in Winterpeg, I don’t care if I ever see snow again. 45 years ago or more…still not nostalgic. Nope.

I need to invest in some of this old Joe & Fish stuff; the more I hear it, the more I’m drawn in. It has something about it….

CJ&F were underrated as a rock and roll band.

Yes, don't miss Essra's first album, "Sandy's Album is Here At Last," either! Mostly just her and piano, but with great contributions from Jim Pepper, Jeremy Steig, and Eddie Gomez here and there. And great songs!

@Soule - thanks, I do have her first album. I bought a real stinker self titled record in the ‘70s. She, basically, disowned that one. There’s a record that she co-produced with Tim Drummond called “Essra Mae Hawk meets the Killer Groove Band”. Ridiculous title and cover but a really good album. Nothing like Primordial Lovers at all.
