And as Neil Postman used to always argue --- the biggest problem with the teaching of figurative language is that it's officially limited to lit class and taught as if they are "decorations." But language is and human cognition are both fundamentally metaphorical. There is no type of languge that is not full of metaphors, mostly invisible to the users. At least lit class (when properly taught) gives you some awareness of this.
