I spent many nights at Phill’s Experimental Intermedia concerts on Centre Street… Rhys Chatham, Tom Johnson, Robert Ashley, Elliot Sharp, Fast Forward… and so on…

Three dollar admission and free Ernest & Julio Gallo wine — the kind that cam in the big unpretentious jug with the finger hole at the neck.

I once brought my mother to a Niblock performance at the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, with films. Petr Kotik gently played his flute in her ear.

I played a few times at Phill's loft. He was always friendly and appreciative. He would make spaghetti dinners for all the artists, and we would eat around the kitchen table with plenty of wine. Those were good times in his loft. I was happy to see last year's solstice show at Roulette. It was really a great show with plenty to listen to, look at, and think about.

Funny you should mention the staircases!

I once acted in a karaoke music video directed by Longo's then-girlfriend Gretchen Bender (a tragically under-known artist who I deeply loved). A couple scenes were filmed on the fire escape (granted, not the staircase proper, but stairs nonetheless).

The video, BTW, is on the old Pioneer karaoke system, and the song is "Tell Him" by The Exciters.

Kyema is a reference to the Bardo of this life in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. in Tibetan (and other) Buddhist cosmology, there are 6 Bardos living beings cycle through, bardo basically being a realm or state we live in.

the other 5 are dreams, meditation, the moment of death, the luminosity of true nature after death, and the bardo of transmigration which directly proceeds rebirth into the bardo of life again.
