German politics are not so directly driven by the state of the economy, as in the U.S., but capital accumulation has taken a hit from higher energy prices, thanks to Putin. The Alternative für Deutschland and other groups further to the right are inspired by the resurrection of Third Reich and other völkisch myths. Still a ways to go to 'achieve' the parlous state of U.S. politics.

The Werte Union, a faction of the conservative CDU (which is about to split off) is more concerned with good ol' conservative German völkisch values (including xenophobia), whereas the Republican Freedom Caucus concentrates on ripping away at the state (spending cuts, &c.) to help capital accumulation, the U.S.'s highest value. A Big State detracts from the maximum possible rate of accumulation.

The U.S.'s Christian right seems to me to be the perfect cover for preserving the freedom of accumulative movement at the cost of the general populace. In Germany, the principle of capital accumulation is not so nakedly savage (rendered milder by the Sozialstaat), but it's there under the surface as the driving force. The German populace is currently waking up to the political danger posed by the right, especially this year with a series of upcoming elections.

The mass media everywhere have turned out to be the perfect medium for herding the masses in mass democracies. Post-WWII TV in the U.S. and elsewhere has generated a manipulable public. Algorithmically driven social media enable finer tuning of the manipulation, while enhancing divisive nastiness. Thank goodness there are still people like Carol.
