Jeff:

Good Morning Bob + fellow listeners. Looking forward to the hour with Laura!
A couple of Laura stories that I probably mentioned before but are worth repeating:
My friend Karen (who I’ve know since birth) went to sleep away camp in the Catskills (early-mid ‘60s). Laura was a camp counselor and would play guitar and sing for the campers. Karen did mention this until years later, but, then again her father, Ruby, was one of the original owners of Gem Spa. EVERYONE hung out there in the ‘60s!
My friend Murray (aka Doc Rock RIP) grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens. His two friends, Ellen and Nydia, loved Laura Nyro. Some time in the late ‘60s, they found the building that Laura was living in (Manhattan), took the subway in and rang her bell. Laura invited them both in, and they hung out and became friends. Nydia “Liberty” Mata was born in Cuba and played percussion. She, not only became friends with but, became Laura’s accompanist on congas for many many years.

Have to go (visiting my mom in snowy Reno, NV) but I’m happy that I caught some of the OHW! Beautiful!

I saw Laura in Central Park summer ‘76; her first gig in NYC after that break she took. It was an incredible night with an incredible band: Richard Davis, John Tropea, Mike Manieri, don’t remember the drummer (maybe, Peter Erskine), and, I would imagine, Nydia “Liberty” Mata on percussion.

Interesting. My memory of that time is watching Jimi Hendrix on The Dick Cavett Show. In that off handed way Dick had he askes Jimi 'So, you just played Woodstock I hear?'

I imagined a big pile of firewood.
  12:52pm
Dean:

Cavett had a way of drawing out his guest's sense of humor. As I recall, Hendrix was witty, too.

I only saw that show when it was first broadcast, but I still remember how jumpy Mr. Hendrix was during the interview.

@Jeff

Who hasn’t Richard Davis played with?
  1:00pm
Dean:

A buddy just sent me a photo of Geezer Butler and family--spouse and four kids--at a Taylor Swift show.

Richard Davis: Many years ago, when my wife and I were hunting for a rental in Berkeley, we found a duplex owned by a young man who had attended the same college as my wife. He studied at its music conservatory, double bass. Later, he studied with Richard Davis.
  1:04pm
Jeff:

@dan - I’m pretty sure a friend of mine saw Richard play with Van Morrison at The Scene before Astral Weeks was released. I saw Richard do plenty of jazz gigs, play with Laura, and (maybe) with Van when he reprised Astral Weeks live at the Beacon Theatre.

@Jeff
The drummer was possibly Andy Newmark

started to watch a taylor swift tiny desk concert, just her solo w/ acoustic guitar and found her performance so histrionic and full of itself i couldn't watch but all the more power to her getting out the vote

Jeff:

@dan - you’re right! Just looked it up. That Central Park gig was the first Laura Nyro show I went to. Of course, my friends saw her at Fillmore East a couple of times (one time, Miles opened; the other one had a virtually unknown Jackson Browne on the bill). Thanks to the Bottom Line, I saw her many times live after that Central Park gig. The last time I saw Laura (a)live was at the Bearsville Theatre. Made plans to go with my (then) wife and a couple of Woodstock friends. Made the mistake of not buying tix in advance. Drove up from Bklyn to find out the show was sold out. Found a door on the side and snuck in!

maybe so...

Dean:

I enjoy Taylor Swift's records to a point. Even have a couple of them. But I can't imagine hearing her solo. I think of Nirvana, a band I never liked, but a band that belonged in dive bars with amps turned all the way up. Then MTV gets this bright idea: Unplugged. More like unfathomable. Who could possibly want to hear acoustic Nirvana. So, it's about context in some cases.

Hi Alex from Media.
I thought it referred to certain rhythms & figures (?) We certainly got a ton of rhythms from
the Spanish. Spain, Latin America, etc.
Many of them used in dances.

I also think Jelly Roll was referring to a rhythm

I see. I was thinking that throwing in a half tone might be derived from the Spanish scales.

I see Terrible was released as a CD in 1995-just reissued in multiple versions a month or so ago. I assume the original had Peter K's notes (think I'll get that on Discogs...)

Peter K.:

All I know is that when "Terrible" was released in 1995, it had liner notes written by me (at Terry's request). The liner notes are missing from the current reissue. I assume Terry decided at some point in the intervening 29 years that he didn't like them.

Curious. So it wasn't, say, a legal issue. I guess I'm used to reissues that promote the fact that they include the original notes.
