Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from April 9, 2024 Favoriting

austinrich's avatar View austinrich's profile Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

There was a desperation to the kinds of artists that got popular in the 90's, all trying to recapture the lightning in a bottle that they got a few times early on. A lot of people were given a lot of money who probably shouldn't have had that much freedom.

It seems like everything sold initially, it just seemed really carefree about novelty records. Imagine being an executive of a record label and knowing that you could strong arm any record into airplay and distribution? and also, they took time to develop talent then, not just culling artists who already have a following.

Pete Drake was an innovator of the vocoder technique, and it was connected to a tabletop guitar in some way. He advised Peter Frampton on his vocoder technique that he used on the seven times platinum "Comes Alive" record. It just baffles me that thing sold seven million copies.

I’ve noticed that only privileged white people make sad music. Black folks haven’t even made sad blues music since like the 40s. It’s all been pretty rockin electric stuff since then. Like, There’s no African version of Coldplay.
Any music I hear from poor tropical countries is always a total party. You just cannot be sad listening to that stuff.

Not that I should talk – my favorite band of the 90s was Portishead. They were just so epically miserable it was awesome!

Black people still play the blues! I think the word "privileged" is heavily loaded here, especially for white people in poverty who also get beaten by police. Sure, there's a privilege, but it's never not denigrating to have a sword fight about oppression, when it's really about class.

And speaking of evolution, highly intelligent people tend to gravitate towards lower keys and octaves, it's a statistical norm. That more white people spent time in cold weather could speak to a reluctance to make dance music, except for those privileged white people in California.
