I used to ride to downtown LA on RTD daily with Lois, Gun Club drummer Terry Graham's ex. At the time he was playing with The Bags, but likely shortly before they disbanded and Gun Club emerged. I'd forgotten that Pat Bag played with them:

The technique of inserting line level audio into a telephone line worked well then, mainly because of the telephone network being mostly analog with very little to no delay. The only real issue was the lack of high frequency response, do to many miles of wires acting like having a capacitor across the line. Capacitors installed this way reduce high audio frequencies.

I gave the Bogen GA-2 more output by connecting a a 70 volt transformer secondary winding at 8 ohms to the 8 ohm output of the GA-2. Then the primary of the transformer was connected to the phone line (red/green wires) through a capacitor .1 to .5 mfd.
