The word "exotic" always creeps me the F out – it's a word which says way more about the speaker (and what that speaker is unfamiliar with) than about the purported subject.

And that's before we get to the massive corpus of just gross white men using the word about Asian women.

Eww.

Hank Williams, Sr.'s greatest influence was an old Black Bluesman. There is so much Blues in Hank ...yet he's considered the Father of Modern Country.
The old joke about 'I like both kinds of Music - Country & Western' has some basis in fact : 'Country' meant Hill Music (Bluegrass & Old UK forms), & 'Western' Cowboy songs ...which you know... Of course - what is it ? A third of actual Cowboys were Black ? For everybody hung up about Beyonce or anybody else... But anyhow - Kuntry as we now it now kinda dates only to the 1940s ? Like most of our Popular forms in way...

Correct. No legal barriers. They could marry one another, but not people of their respective, preferred gender preference. That sort of union offered cover at a time when people were expected to marry. Though it was love in the way friends love each other, it must have been dissatisfying. Their outside love affairs were still not socially acceptable. Gay people were, and still are, persecuted and often killed.

Thanks, San Pedro Girl. In spring 2004 I took a Law & Sexuality course in law school with two amazing professors, Angela Harris and Kathy Abrams. After the Valentine's Day weekend, when then Mayor Newsom kick-started real government action in favor of same-sex marriage, we of course discussed the development. Two out queer guys in class, one a friend I love and admire to this day, lamented the action. They wanted the government out of their private lives entirely. This entailed eliminating the institution of marriage altogether. I have to say, even though (and not because) I'm a married man, I get their point.

I sometimes -- usually -- think of marriage a lot like the cops: an institution that is supposed to be good for society but that has its foundations so deep in oppression, violence, and even outright slavery that I don't think that it's salvageable. But I'm notoriously a downer.
