It does feature Walter Becker doing all the guitar and bass work, and it was commissioned (I've heard by Irving Azoff) so maybe it was a rush job. But it was a hit record for them and actually won a Grammy too. Becker's guitar work is great, and Jeff Porcaro on drums is always a highlight.

i agree that the folks being mentioned are hook-meisters. but, they sure didn't last long after a spell of chart success. when folks like nick lowe just have It.

...yeah probly what it is - what I think of as 'Power Pop' had a big fat blindspot of what's in the actual Charts in the first place ...just like it never occurred to me to call Styx & Kansas 'Prawg'...

Please, did *anyone* else see Rick Springfield on the TV show Wonder Woman? He played a "famous popstar" whose hit was called "What's My Moniker, Veronica", and the cover was a copy of Magical Mystery Tour with different words pasted on the cover. This happened, but there is no evidence. It does sound like something I would dream up.

Nick Lowe had only one top 40 hit. 2 if you count Peace Love and Understanding. RS had several. And he's still cranking out new music.

Oh absolutely! Charts might be one measure of success, but they're hardly the only one. Richard Thompson never had a top 40 hit. And he's a hell of a musician.

I think getting on the charts is as much a matter of luck, as anything. But I think there certainly were a lot of great tunes in the charts up until I got old and out of touch. lol

I think the British charts tend to be better, though.
