A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

For those outside of the Mid-Valley, John Henry's has a long history, going back to at least the late 80's, probably even longer than that. The original owners are no longer involved, and this new incarnation had a very long gap between when it used to be around, and now. But it is a well-known name in Eugene, and a great place to get to play.

Joe Baiza (of Saccharine Trust) was sort of blowing my mind with his guitar playing at these shows. He really was excellently suited for changing with the songs as they developed. He was a lot of fun to watch, and I wish I could have talked to him more than the handful of times we chatted.

Blast Off! is a vintage clothing show that hosts DIY shows in the basement, periodically. Not often, and only for very special shows. Spirit Bird

Xeres: And now to explain the etymology of the word dinosaur, we have our guest expert, with a spiel to explain the Latin origins.

Mike Watt:

Dinosaur.
Think of "saur."
They fucked up with the word "dinosaur."
"Saur": lizard.
Think of a lizard.
Think of an alligator.
A crocodile.
And where do their legs connect?
On the side.
Now, think what they call "saur."
Fossils.
The ones that are really old.
But the legs don't come out the sides.
Like a lizard. Or alligator. Or crocodile.
They come out straight down.
Like a chicken.
Like a turkey.
Like an ostrich.
Or a bird!
Yes they were.
They weren't lizards.
Now "dino" means mean.
Mean lizard?
Uh-uh.
Spirit bird.
Spirit bird.
Spirit bird.

I have visited a certain haunted cemetery several times, including spending the night there, and I have seen a number of odd things.

One strange thing that I saw was something like a grey Norwegian Longhair, much like the pet that I had at the time, except it was massive. It was at least 65 pounds. I don't know if it was a bobcat or what, and the way that I saw it was during the day, walking down the concrete path that leads into the cemetery, which was otherwise lined with trees. So with the sun reflecting off of the concrete and all, the cat looked like a mirage. It walked right past me, so I stared at it for a good 50 yards before it seemingly disappeared.

I don't include that in the stories I tell about that cemetery, because people will think I'm crazy. In fact, someone who interviewed me about that cemetery was very intrigued until I told them about that cat, and then it was radio silence after that, and I don't think the interview was published anywhere.

What I loved about watching Watt play bass - and this has been the case since I first saw him with Firehose in the 90's - is that when he gets into a real groove, he starts playing with his tongue sticking out.

It reminds me of my dad; when he would juggle in front of crowds, and he was concentrating hard, he would stick his tongue out, too.

By the way, I have definitely had times doing weekly radio where it was hard not to integrate the other things I was doing. For example, I was sort of obsessed with silent films because I had done a live set to a segment of Wizard of Oz's silent film version, and wanted to do more. So I played things like Nosferatu in full on the radio. There were other times where I was working on a comp that I spent a lot of time on-- 80 hours on the cover art collage alone, and I was just playing stuff that I was considering for the comp. So I can understand how that can spill over into radio. I didn't record a lot of live shows around then, but did used to book weekly shows, for a while it was twice a week.

The Ex played with Hamid Drake in Chicago, and it was improvised, but it was better than anything I'd heard by any of the artists prior.

I still sort of want to hear an improv group that sounds like the band in the movie Lost Highway...

I first saw The Ex open for Shellac and Fugazi in 1999 or so... They were great, but I'd like to hear more of their experimental side.

I am not a great expert at improv, but I was fortunate to see Ken Vandermark and Mars Williams with various line ups several times. Vandermark did a live improv set with Mike Patton once, he was on tour with a band opening for Tool, but one of the members of Tool was sick, so he came for a surprise show.

For the show in Salem, Pete was our sound person, who really did a great show, in spite of the fact that we are not a rock band, and don't have guitars.

I can't remember the name of the sound person in Eugene, but they were excellent, too and worked well with all of us.

And Kati at Blast Off! worked the door, too, if I recall correctly. Very cool of her to do that.

Speaking of Mike Watt, and his humility, the only other person I know of who maintains this enthusiasm and is not burnt out or jaded by the sheer magnitude of sounds out there, is GX Jupitter-Larsen. He sits in a chair and listens to damn near every set, even if the sets are 12 hours long and there are three days of it. I am always going to support that, because I can't say the same for myself. I tend to be strategic about what sets I am there to see, especially if I was performing on that day.

I liked all the performances, but these were my faves of both shows. I could do a whole other shows that's more of the Trio, and of course, the rest of our sets... but this seemed like good stuff to feature.

I remember that label, they put out a number of things I picked up.

I think they posted on facebook not to send CDR demos with handwritten letters on looseleaf paper shortly after I did just that. What a coincidence!

They have featured post cards and things from me too. I did a CDR called "Radio Feedback" and part of that was me recording the sound of the radio station I was at while there was a broken transmitter, so the stream was still working, but locally, the signal was making odd sounds, so I recorded the broken transmitter and played it for the streaming listeners to hear. This is something that GX also did, for his "radio installations". He also prepared a 4 hour set for my show, good guy.
