Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

A live music quadruple-header from Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Performances by Chicha Libre, Andy Statman, Mavrothis Kontanis and Marta Topferova. With co-host / tech guru Irene Trudel and engineer Gil Shuster.

Special thanks to volunteer Greta and board ops Robin Edgerton and Mark Allen!

About the Performers:

Andy Statman began his career in the 70's as a virtuoso mandolinist who studied and performed with David Grisman. He went on to study clarinet with the klezmer legend Dave Tarras, becoming one of the original driving forces in the Klezmer revival.

Chicha Libre plays Chicha music from Peru. Chicha is the name of a corn-based liquor enjoyed by the Incas. Chicha is also the name of a South American music craze which started out in the late 70's in the Peruvian Amazon. These were songs loosely inspired by Colombian accordion-driven cumbias but blended with the distinctive sounds of Andean melodies, Cuban son, and the psychedelic sounds of surf guitars, farfisa organs and moog synthesizers.

Marta Topferova composes and performs beautifully lyrical music rooted in Latin rhythms such as Venezuelan vals, merengue and gaita, Cuban son and Argentinean zamba while adding her sensibility to it all with her background in classical music and the folklore of her native Czechoslovakia. She accompanies herself on the 4-string-cuatro.

Mavrothis Kontanis performs a variety of traditional and classical music from Greece and the Near East with oud, voice, and percussion. His focus is on the folk and urban music of Asia Minor's Greek population, but also touches upon the songs of the Greek mainland and islands which were influenced by the music of Asia Minor refugees.
