Asha Bhosle with her late husband / collaborator R. D. Burman.

Asha Bhosle recently completed a 75th birthday tour with a stop at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, April 17 and a retrospective CD 75 Years of Asha due out shortly on Times Square records.

Asha has sung for Indian films since she was ten years old. As a playback singer, she's provided the musical voice for hundreds of actors. She's recorded thousands of film songs in Hindi and many regional languages, and won scores of awards from India's film industry.

But Asha Bhosle is acclaimed as well for her versatility: She sings traditional music in her native Marathi language, Hindu devotional songs and Urdu ghazals - romantic sung poetry. Her Indian classical collaboration with Ali Akhbar Khan garnered a Grammy nomination. She's collaborated with various artists outside Indian music from Boy George to the Kronos Quartet - and even participated in an 80s UK dance-pop project with with members of Blancmange and Yazoo called West India Company.

Listener comments!

  6:30pm slugluv1313:

thanks for the Shujaat music, Rob! i am not working at the show to-night (bummer!) but ever since i first heard/saw him some years ago (as the sun was beginning to peek through the stained glass windows at the first All Night Indian Classical Music concert that i worked at . . . MAGICAL!) -- i have NEVER forgotten the unique, transforming quality of his music . . . and the "Hawa Hawa" album in particular (REALLY helped a lot as i was driving home after cremation ceremony for CHAOS some years ago) -- Mr. Khan's sitar playing is sooooo beautiful but i love it when he sings too!

LOVING this interview with the amazing Ms. Bhosle!!!!!!! (you are SO lucky to have met with her !!!!!!! how were you able to arrange this????? i do not think i would have been able to have spoken a single word; i would have been in total awe!)
  7:49pm Your DJ:

Thanks slugluv. You know it was a tricky interview, she's not a big talker especially in English. But you know it's special just to have a little visitation with a figure of her stature. To help things along I've chosen to drop in a lot of music; hopefully it can serve as a little introduction to Asha.
  8:30pm will:

hey there rob,

  2:17pm Ted from Baltimore:

Listening on the archives -- just a wonderful show. Every track has moved me in some way, but Yuhun Na Thi in particular is just breathtaking. And wonderful, of course to learn about Asha Bhosle and her family.
  12:55pm Your DJ:

Yuhun Na Thi was the song that originally introduced me to Asha Bhosle, courtesy of the producers of the WOMEX festivals in England who included it on their "Talking Book Asia". Much credit should also go to Hariharan, who is responsible for the music. You might still be able to find the full Asha Bhosle / Hariharan ghazal album on which Yuhun Na Thi originally appeared, "Abshaar-e-Ghazal", at Indian / South Asian shops, or online.
