Listener comments!

  12:21am
david from ks.:

hey PG,,,,,You havent been away long enough for them [the secret evil bush govnt[ brown skinned version] and hey im brown skinned 2 yall !to stop spraying our supposidly beautiful Blue Sky and intentionally poisoning everywhere but kenebunkport ,maine,[sp?]whille im still having nightmares of spraynozzles connected to tankerplanes,,,,,,okay theres that outta the way..Peace and Love otherwise,,,,,and hey that device You constructed and played that aerosmith song through was a refreshing change for that that song [i cant remember what your device was called,,,rock on mr.master dj,,,d
  12:24am
PGB:

David! It was the Shepard Tone-izer. I didn't make one of those tonight. I gotta remember for next time!
  12:42am
tim:

Чего бог делал что вы можете сыграть такое нот?
  12:45am
PGB:

Not sure, but I've got some Russkie Wig-Out coming up later in the show.
  12:47am
tim:

Друг и помогать, большой успех!
  1:03am
royatl:

Why do you guys announce songs??? i.e. "just heard e, then before that d, then c, then before that, b, and we started it off with a"
That is the most stupid thing I've ever heard and I think it started with college djs of the 80's. In the 70's when I was on college radio, we always went "We started that set off with A, then you heard B, and you just heard C" (NOTE: We didn't back announce more than three cuts!!!!!!!) geez.
  1:04am
royatl:

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.
  1:05am
GM:

There's a tradeoff between hearing the song callbacks and hearing the DJ on the air...not always want to hear the DJ on every, say, three songs.
  1:09am
PGB:

"We're here to help." If you don't like the complete back-announcement, you're going to cringe while I announce all these short tracks!
  1:10am
GM:

It's cool, bring it on!
  1:11am
royatl:

Announcing more cuts is ok as long as the cuts are short. But my *main* pet-peeve is going in reverse order.
  1:14am
MD:

I wish just ONE of these 50/50 artists would edit by hand/by ear. Even this "monotonous" is clearly computer edited. It all sounds too perfect, too samey. Today's sound editors should have their computers taken away and be forced to use a pair of linked cassette decks for a decade. / Rant not directed at you PGB, glad you're playing this stuff. Excellent show throughout, thanks.
  1:15am
Ike:

I prefer back-announcements in reverse order.
  1:16am
fleep:

I like my back announced right after they announce my front.
  1:17am
MD:

That's your *main* pet peeve, eh? Are you sure your name ain't royal-t?

Baby got back announced.
  1:20am
GM:

Also, there may be some DJ-influenced choice at times...the song played immediately prior to the mic break is one the DJ wants to highlight, and reverse-order allows him/her to talk about it first before anyone forgets about it.
  1:21am
PGB:

Good point. Also: As someone who had to wield a razor blade on quarter-inch tape, I like being able to fiddle with the audio without getting schnitznels on the floor.
  1:21am
royatl:

Teh powah of teh interwebs! My comments causing hundreds, maybe thousands of listeners a thousand miles away from me to go? WTF is he talking about?!
  1:22am
PGB:

Nobody's going anywhere. (Stick around for the eclipse.)
  1:23am
fleep:

Eclipse spoiler: The moon reappears.
  1:24am
tim:

brilliant
  1:26am
royatl:

Ike, if you're still there, why? really (important to me because I'm writing a dj training manual, and I want input)
  1:27am
Julie:

Wow this is groovy...
  1:29am
Julie:

I heard Kate Bush Wuthering Heights in that collage. Yay :)
  1:30am
PGB:

Yep...the one by Jeffrey Sconce.
  1:31am
tim:

Super groovy. The moon is starting to look soft on one side.
  1:31am
royatl:

gm: point taken if you're only going to announce the last couple of songs. i.e.: "You just heard B ...(stuff about B), and before that you heard, A (optional stuff about A). Now, here's C" is perfectly fine with me.
  1:33am
tim:

How did I happen to tune in tonight, this night of all nights? So great. Kim & Buran... you're making us all sick with pleasure.
  1:33am
MD:

PGB: I think this was directed at my comment about computer editing: "As someone who had to wield a razor blade on quarter-inch tape..."?
To which I say, exACTly. That experience is what's lacking from the editing of people who have no experience of tape, maddening, painstaking, accidentally-beauty-creating tape. I bet your own edits, even on computer, have a little life in them, don't sound so canned..
  1:34am
royatl:

clouds just moving in here, of course. grr.
  1:36am
PGB:

Julie is coming up at 3 AM EST. We were just checking out the beginning of the eclipse. Yeehah! No clouds in Jersey City.
  1:37am
fleep:

Envy anyone with a clear sky tonight, it's the fourth day of continuous Blade Runner rain in L.A.
  1:37am
Julie:

Perfect view!
  1:37am
royatl:

MD: digital vs tape editing, I'd almost agree with you, but it would be more over jealousy than actual aesthetics. I.e. I liked the edits, but still wish they could appreciate what we used to have to go through in the "good old days."
  1:39am
fleep:

it was the same with film editing, before the Avid etc. dailies hanging in bins with a big metal movieola, it gave it a hand crafted feel
  1:39am
Ike:

Hey Royatl (re: 1:26 cmnt), like PGB said, if I tune to FMU in the middle of a set of music while driving, I can count back to the song I'm curious about when back-annmts are done in reverse order, but not if done in forward order. Also the more recently-played tracks are of more immediate interest b/c I can't remember what was played at the start of the set anyway w/my leaky brain.
  1:40am
Julie:

I thought everyone announced in reverse order. Makes sense to me to start with what you just heard.
  1:40am
tim:

атмение, отсутствие потребности. Это настолько гениально. (И it' s замерзая снаружи.)
  1:42am
tim:

Все должны похвалить PGB.
  1:44am
royatl:

Ike: I understand, but the brain leaks because it's being asked to rearrange the order.
  1:44am
PGB:

Thanks, Tim. But even though the show is going pretty well...I'm going to wait until it's over!
  1:46am
tim:

At least take a peek.
  1:47am
Ike:

Not true. I meant the memory of what the earliest songs sounded like leaked, before annmts begin. + I'm used to reverse order. Like Julie said, evryone here does it. (Minus a couple of holdouts, but don't remember whom... maybe Rich H.?)
  1:47am
royatl:

Julie: In the 70's the places I worked at always forward announced, but we had a maximum of four cuts in a set, and the first one wasn't announced if it was pre-announced. The reverse announcing seemed to start with college radio in the 80's, and then infected commercial radio as those jocks got jobs.
  1:47am
ra:

Perfect tune to sacrifice my cat to the lunar gods, thanks!
  1:48am
royatl:

I'm gonna have to order the Russkie Wig-Out! CD.
  1:49am
PGB:

Russkie Wig-Out on the OMNI RECORDING label.
  1:50am
Julie:

oh no...we're all infected.
  1:51am
royatl:

yea, already got it up on Amazon.
  1:51am
fleep:

and the only cure is: more cowbell
  1:51am
tim:

I can see Russia from Sarah's back yard.
  1:57am
royatl:

From Amazon desc. of Russkie... : "Imagine Bruce Haack detained at the border by KGB operatives and thrown into the Gulag with the tortured remains of Dick Dale and Les Baxter."
  1:59am
PGB:

Oh yeah! Some of the other tracks on the Russkie album are more electronicky. All very interesting.
  1:59am
Julie:

Be careful in Sarah's backyard she has guns
  2:02am
royatl:

my god does this (TCKO) take me back!
  2:04am
osvi:

Kazoos rule.
  2:04am
PGB:

Fun fact (that I'm pretty sure is true): TCKO was the first album released by RHINO.
  2:06am
david from ks.:

wazzat mick for real? i could`nt tell,,,,amazing ,,,,
  2:06am
tim:

Big ol' bite outta dat double stuff Oreo inna sky.
  2:07am
PGB:

About half-gone!
  2:08am
Aharon:

Great music to do taxes to.
  2:10am
tim:

Having got penumbral and umbral under its belt, total starts in 30.
  2:10am
royatl:

  2:15am
Julie:

  2:24am

  2:34am
royatl:

  2:36am
tim:

  2:40am
Joshua K:

Cool moon
  2:42am
PGB:

Now playing: music for casting our shadow 250,000 miles into space.
  2:50am
royatl:

oh well, giving up on the astronomical show. Only see lights of the suburbs reflecting off the clouds.
  2:53am
edinblack:

I guess I better run out and check the moon!
I did and saw the last sliver of sunlight...!
  2:54am
edinblack:

In L.A. they can't watch because-------it's RAINING! The irony.
  2:55am
PGB:

It never rains in California...
