Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

I am writing these liner notes on August 9th, 2011 - well after the airing of this show. I am also confessing that I kind of skimped on these notes. I apologize for there brevity and for what I omitted or misplaced. You see, it has been a very busy Summer and I have fallen behind - not to mention I haven't had a dual-cassette deck for some time now - or a car. Our Jeep has been in the shop for what seems like forever. We also went to Iowa for my class reunion, so, I've been slacking a bit and I'm afraid it shows. I was really cranking along there for a bit, but I've dropped the ball. It happens.

As far as the digital thing goes, I guess it doesn't work all that well for Dusty. It's a change-up, but it seems to steal something cool from the overall vibe that I miss. Those cassette decks are getting harder to come by. And I use a very specific model. We'll see how it plays out. I hope you'll stick with me and take the ride and we'll see what the future brings.

Email me if you have the time. I love to hear your thoughts and opinions on anything at all.

dusty@wfmu.org

Until next time my friends, take care and ... always remember.

Cecile:

Clay, you got any Bill Withers?
  3:28pm
other david:

*passes BSI a cold beer*
  3:30pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Mitch, the Battle of the DJs was a few weeks ago. It's okay to rate Clay on his own merits and not how he compares to another DJ. This is WFMU; DJs are encouraged to have their own style.
  3:31pm
Dan B From Upstate:

other david: Kicking my feet up and listening to Clay for four hours sounds like a nice plan. Only problem is that I have Mad Men and Breaking Bad waiting for me when I get home. Do I watch TV, or do I rock out with Clay (and Night People Later?)
  3:32pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Hell with it. I'm gonna stay for the music and banter.
  3:32pm
12539:

Clay is always busy competing with himself, even without Fabio.
  3:32pm
other david:

Dan B: I'd have to go with Clay, he never ceases to put a smile on my face :)
  3:33pm
hopey:

Oooo, Clay interviews Station Mgr Ken!
  3:33pm
other david:

What's Kens message of peace and love to the world?
  3:34pm
Cecile:

Get Corey Booker from Newark. He's a great mayor and probably would love to play music.
  3:34pm
Jennique:

Chris Christie is in the hospital right now! It's not a head trauma related, though. ASTHMA!
  3:35pm
Tom ( The Bactrian Support Network ):

Hey Clay !!!!! ELP Rules
  3:36pm
Cecile:

I can go on and on about surgery.

I actually kind of enjoy it. The sleep is amazing...
  3:37pm
jaycjay:

I had a blood infection once, too. Didn't need any kind of surgery, but it still sucked.
  3:37pm
Swami:

Had shoulder surgery in March!
  3:38pm
Dan B From Upstate:

What does Ken look for in an audition tape?
  3:38pm
julie:

holding phone to ear no headphones!
  3:38pm
other david:

ahahaha :)

loving these sordid details of Fabio's past!
  3:38pm
Swami:

I've had 2 concussions!
  3:39pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I've had 1 hernia!
  3:39pm
Ike:

@Cecile, yeah I like Booker, he's my mayor, but he's prob. too busy appearing on Meet the Press, etc., and tweeting Gandhi quotes. Also we've had a lot of shootings lately.
  3:39pm
hopey:

I am loving this interview.
  3:43pm
Cecile:

Ike LOLOLOLOLOLOL!
  3:43pm
wild neil:

Ken-
My wife has Lyme, is there a doctor you can recommend?
  3:43pm
hopey:

We're listening!
  3:44pm
Tom ( The Bactrian Support Network ):

Cassettes rule !!! sound is not measured in digits ....
  3:45pm
other david:

Oh my dear lord, please Clay, Ken and Julie for the whole show :D
  3:45pm
ASB:

Antipsychotics for Lyme! That is trippy.
  3:45pm
3D:

(real) good job, Clay. (4 words)
  3:45pm
Doug C.:

I got chronic Lyme at Stokes Forest in NJ. Symptoms much like Kens. It's been quite the party for 7-1/2 years. A lot of very expensive treatment with nominal results. I don't think they know what to do.
  3:46pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Also... any plans for Ken to do another Speed Pitch show any time soon?
  3:46pm
McFly:

What were you doing in that tree, George?
What, Lorraine? What?
  3:48pm
wild neil:

Doug C-
Is there a serious lack of consensus regarding treatment? What is the most effective treatment for the emotional effects/ depression??
  3:48pm
pizzadog:

Lower voice in hardware store. Check.
When do you raise your voice?
  3:49pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Fabio as a dandy...I guess I can see that!
  3:51pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

hypochondriacs don't NEED reasons
  3:51pm
Kenzo:

Charles Baudelaire, in the later, "metaphysical" phase of dandyism defined the dandy as one who elevates æsthetics to a living religion
  3:51pm
Tom ( The Bactrian Support Network ):

caller : you can ummm... also .. go to the ... DOCTOR !!!!!
  3:53pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

(or mouth opener)
  3:55pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

pre K--that's "J", right?
  3:57pm
Cecile:

  3:57pm
Tom ( The Bactrian Support Network ):

Dump him caller he don't wanna buy the cow...
  3:57pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

he's just got one?
  3:58pm
Doug C.:

wild neil-
There is a serious lack of consensus not only about treatment but what the disease actually is. I saw Dr. Bernard Raxlen in NYC and had IV for almost a year.
As to depression etc. I don't know if there is a good solution at least for me.
  3:58pm
J J:

I know when I first heard Clay I pictured him with a straw hat, chewing on a stalk of wheat.
  3:59pm
wild neil:

HYPER-chondria is the opposite of HYPO Chondria??
  3:59pm
wild neil:

Doug C-
Can we discuss this further offline somehow?
  3:59pm
Mudcat:

Keith's book is definitely worth reading
  3:59pm
ASB:

I think he retracted the retraction, though? About snorting his dad?

This is GREAT radio!!!!!!!!!!!
  4:01pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

hey, play a number!
  4:01pm
still b/p:

Cecile -- don't just call it, call him, like Phyllis Diller's hubby.
  4:01pm
frenchee:

It is great radio, and my new idol is Shelley "MAG."
She withstood the Clay Pigeon scrutiny!
  4:01pm
Doug C.:

wild neil-
email me your number and I'll give you a call. designnow@verizon.net
  4:01pm
Mudcat:

He said that as he removed the lid from the box, some of the ashes blew onto the table, so he wiped his finger over it and snorted the residue
  4:02pm
Lucas:

Wild Neil: The best in the world!! Hi everyone!!!
  4:02pm
Kenzo:

Man, gotta add private channels to the comments board...
  4:02pm
Dan B From Upstate:

You know... it almost doesn't matter the topic, but I can listen to two dudes just chatting forever.
  4:03pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Clay has this great way of getting pretty much anybody to talk about pretty much anything, no matter how personal or difficult. It's a rare person that can be that disarming. And it also makes for great radio.
  4:03pm
pfapfap:

Play some James Taylor for Ken!
  4:04pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

his ability to come out of left field with a question is unsurpassed
  4:05pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

never trust a chicken!
  4:05pm
Cecile:

Gotta go to a meeting, will be back in a bit.

Save the Foghat for when i get back.
  4:05pm
other david:

There was an amazing call when Clay filled in on Julies show - where he put a guy on the air who wasnt expecting it, and he got very defensive and was going to hang up - Clay opened him up and kept him on the phone for 45 minutes or more
  4:05pm
Van:

We're all on borrowed time
  4:07pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I'll pay you good $ to build me a brothel, Hugh
  4:08pm
wild neil:

Hugh, was that north of Vernon, NJ?? It had big mirrors and some black walls?
  4:08pm
J J:

"On Borrowed Time" with Lionel Barrymore. Movie is awesome.
  4:09pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Sing it, Ken! Next: Corn Weenie!
  4:09pm
hopey:

I live in Hollywood and see transactions occurring more than I'd like to admit.
  4:10pm
Tom ( The Bactrian Support Network ):

Hugh had definitely been around the block a few times....
  4:10pm
J J:

Wow.
  4:10pm
Lizardner Dave:

I just imagined what it would be like if Ken tried to sing his fight song to Andy. Actually, now that I think of it Clay Pigeon is pretty much the anti-Andy, isn't he? He WANTS it to be a long story.
  4:10pm
Van:

Wow. Am I the only one who can't possibly remember my high school song?
  4:11pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

barkeep, a Concussion with Lyme, please
  4:11pm
ASB:

"Tonight, when you go home: love."
  4:11pm
other david:

We don't have high school songs here, mercifully.
  4:12pm
Dude #8:

@ Van
You must be a Muncie boy!
  4:14pm
Gabriel:

This is the first time I've tuned in at this hour and you are my new fave thing.
  4:14pm
Van:

Muncie, IN? Nope...Texas.
  4:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Clay!
Sorry I wasn't here sooner, for once I wasn't at work--my office closed early today and I had to take a much-needed swim and some rays first--I need to brown up!

I'm here for the remainder--and Ken's here again!!!
  4:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

@david: But do the "public" schools have songs? Or ridiculous little chants, Latin epigrams/mottoes, etc?
  4:15pm
frenchee:

My high school song was to the tune of "St. Louis Woman"--"We're the mighty Blue Devils and victory is our name"
  4:16pm
dave from knoxville:

Hi Clay and Ken!!! Clay, you know my deep feelings for you. What's this belly up business?
  4:16pm
other david:

Matt - possibly actually, what with their rugby teams and all

but I went to the free schools :)
  4:16pm
Van:

@Matt Hey Matt! I think it is about to turn into a triumvirate again with Julie...
  4:17pm
Greg from Bloomfield:

I was JUST about to say that Clay sounds like Scharpling!
  4:18pm
frenchee:

GET OFF MY PHONE
  4:18pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

well, you know what they say about first impressions....you only get one!
  4:18pm
other david:

Oh dear, I love Clay
  4:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Greg: What?? Heave ho!
  4:19pm
Marc in Liverpool:

Scharpling talks too much about his friend's bands. The amount of promotion is suffocating.
  4:19pm
hamburger / london:

howdy - just back from a rush trip for food.. which dj were they referring to? tom scharpling?
  4:19pm
Greg from Bloomfield:

I imagine I would be frustrated by that if I wasn't also the world's biggest Ted Leo fan...
  4:20pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

when is this Tom Scharpling on?
  4:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

Tom Scharpling is a "loudmouth"--he said he was influenced by the original Howard Stern shows in the 80s. A lot of people think he's offputing at first, but many then say they grow to appreciate the Best Show. Tom's remarkably sharp, sometimes in a very subtle way, other times just laugh out loud!
  4:21pm
other david:

My face hurts from laughing too much already
  4:22pm
Tom ( The Bactrian Support Network ):

This is getting a bit .. ... weird ...
  4:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Not a vamp, are you? A daywalker? :)
Tom Scharpling, Tuesdays 9-midnight. Also Archives and podcasts. (Clay has podcasts too! Subscribe! Or at least DL your favorites! Thank you Ken for WFMU's astounding web capabilities!)
  4:23pm
other david:

Tom, they'll behave when Julie arrives.... or get worse!
  4:24pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

For a female person like me, this -- men's underwear, peeing habits -- is all very interesting... and entirely not what I expected to hear during Fabio's radio slot. Rock on, Clay! This is fun.
  4:25pm
phillip:

yay! more clay! and ken
  4:25pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

which Foghat is he gonna pull out?
  4:26pm
Lizardner Dave:

@Marc - bingo. I listen to Best Show on archive because I like the music Tom plays, the bits with Jon are absolutlely brilliant, the banter with the regular callers is very funny but when the shilling for friends and the bashing of enemies starts I start fast forwarding through the show until I find a spot where the subject changes (and for the record I used to turn Stern off for the same reasons).
  4:27pm
Bas, NL:

Clay 'n Ken? Wow! I'm too late switching in!
  4:27pm
dave from knoxville:

Did Clay quiver when you said Deloris Telescope, Ken? He usually doesn't seem to want to talk about it
  4:29pm
other david:

did I hear the door open? :)
  4:30pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3517/3270337931_5249243ff1.jpg
  4:30pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Oh no! It's not streaming!
  4:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hello Bas!
Special 4 hours of Clay today!
And Julie! Hellllllo there!
  4:32pm
Wow:

It's the new triumvirate!
  4:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

@dave: Hi Dave! It's been a while since you called! I was starting to miss you! Don't let Jason and Fredericks steal all your thunder :)
  4:32pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

BAS!!! Hello!
  4:33pm
Amanda the Power Child:

Constipation...in Utopia!!!
  4:33pm
Clay Talking to the Deloris Telescope Audience:

Scuse me, while I kiss this guy!
  4:33pm
hopey:

I always preferred Stewart Copeland to Sting.
  4:33pm
Ike:

That was a great moment:

Clay: Foghat coming!
Ken: <door slams>
  4:34pm
other david:

yay Julie :)

Ken has to come back on the air tonight too
  4:34pm
Bas, NL:

Hi Matt!! Brilliant! One for the achives!
  4:35pm
Bas, NL:

Hi WENDY!!!!!!!
  4:35pm
Phil C.:

I can hear Ken comin' on the air tonight, oh lord
  4:35pm
KickTheBobo:

play some Rich Rags!
  4:36pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Bas, have you eaten any good Kaas lately?
  4:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ike: Yes, too funny :)
@Bas: Hi Wendy! I didn't realize you were actually into cheeses ("formaggio") until that one Triumvirate chat where they mentioned your fine taste in cheese!
  4:36pm
Joe McGasko listener:

Did Clay see Julie on the comments during Joe McG's last show, and the clamoring for Warrant's Cherry Pie? Maybe you could help a girl out, Clay.
  4:37pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Hey, wait a minute, which came first: this Foghat song, or "Train Kept a'Rollin"? I smell a rat!
  4:37pm
Joe McGasko listener:

Shit, I thought this WAS "Train Keeps..." LMAO
  4:38pm
Clay:

Hi Everyone. Thanks for hanging in there!
  4:38pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Joe McG Listener: It is, if you squint! :-D
  4:38pm
Big Joe Turner:

huh?
  4:39pm
other david:

I just remembered I'm going Clay Pigeon shooting tomorrow :/

It seems wrong now..
  4:39pm
Bas, NL:

@Wendy.. Had some awsome "Bleu d'Auvergne" this week. Very fresh, absolutely tasty!
  4:39pm
Mike East:

Of course when Clay is on for 3 hours I am unable to actually listen because everything is falling apart at work. This will have to be downloaded. I'm here in spirit.
  4:39pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Clay, hanging in?!? Give yourself some credit, Mister! This is FUN and great radio. xoxo
  4:40pm
Joe McGasko listener:

Wow, this Rush song is NEVER played on the radio any more (add your own emoticon here)
  4:40pm
Lizardner Dave:

Rush on WFMU. A dream come true. Thanks Clay!
  4:40pm
Bas, NL:

*banner* C L A Y !!!! */banner*
  4:40pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Thursday morning Meghan is of course known for her love of Rush.
  4:41pm
Cheri Pi:

I never thought I'd live to hear the day I heard Rush on 'FMU.
  4:41pm
Cheri Pi:

I never thought I'd live to hear the day I heard Rush on 'FMU.
  4:41pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Bas, Bleu d'Auvergne is a lovely cheese. You have good taste!
  4:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

RUSH! Tom Sawyer, my intro to the band.
And yes, I think that Foghat makes "Train Kept A-Rollin" sound like easy listening. Same basic riff, but harder!
  4:41pm
Dale:

As Scott muni used to say in my local rock station's promos, turn it up and rip the knob off!
  4:41pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Matt from Sp'fld: were you talking to me or to Bas about the formaggio?
  4:42pm
dave from knoxville:

RED BARCHETTA!!! THE REVEALING SCIENCE OF GOD!!! THE SCHOOL OF INSTANT PAIN !!!!!
  4:42pm
Jennique:

Is Rush heavy metal? You decide...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeOrddRaSM8
  4:42pm
?:

play Xanadu!
  4:42pm
other david:

I suspect we're gonna break the website again :D
  4:42pm
dave from knoxville:

Julie, you're the bomb too
  4:42pm
Bas, NL:

Rush is way cool!
  4:43pm
Cheri Pi:

Tom Sawyer was a Canadian dragon.
  4:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

Apparently the "Tom Sawyer" instrumental break was based on the keyboard warm-up scale Geddy used in rehearsals.
  4:43pm
Fabio's Stepfather:

RE: Rush. My son is less than pleased.
  4:43pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

I will also go on the record as saying I like Rush. I grew up in suburban NJ, I'm in my late-30s and I'm pretty much Caucasian. You do the math!
  4:43pm
dave from knoxville:

Clay Pigeon saved my life tonight, Sugar Bear
  4:44pm
Cheri Pi:

I am less than pleased also, CP has sullied the air-nets.
  4:44pm
Wayne and Garth:

<headbanging insanely>
  4:44pm
other david:

I owe my knowledge of Rush entirely to WFMU
  4:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Wendy: To you, of course! (Bas commented on cheese after that).

I was going to ask about Mahon--I just tried that, and loved it!
  4:45pm
BSI:

heard Tom Sawyer a million times but this is the first time I've really listened to the vocal stylings. It's kind of hilarious.
  4:45pm
Handsome Harry:

Ayn Rand - the intellectual godmother of emptiness, the shallow catalyst of exploitation.
  4:45pm
Lizardner Dave:

I would like some more Rush please. Red Barchetta, Freewill, hell, play Time Stand Still. Aimee Mann is a friend of the station after all.
  4:46pm
I X Key!:

  4:46pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Well thanks, Matt. Here's some shameful self-promotion: http://www.cheesesnob.com
Mahon, from Majorca, Spain. A snappy, tart cows' milk cheese with a pimenton-rubbed rind. It's a good one!
  4:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Wendy: It's funny, cheese used to nauseate me if it wasn't melted as a condiment, and all the Euro cheeses too exotic to comprehend. Since I turned 20 or so I've been loving new cheeses. Manchego! That is one of my favs!

And any clue how to pronounce "Mahon"?
  4:47pm
Bas, NL:

Clay * Julie = 100°F ;D
  4:47pm
Cecile:

Aw, missed the Foghat.
  4:48pm
Cecile:

Parson Jack Russell, the inventor of the dog. There are two schisms in that terrier world. Jack Russell Terriers refuse to be included in the AKC; Parson Russell Terriers are included in the AKC and have slightly longer legs.
  4:49pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Matt, welcome to the Cheese Side. You are in a better place. Mahon is very easy to say: mah-hone. Well, unless I'm saying it wrong... ;-)
  4:49pm
Cecile:

Many breed clubs/associations don't want to be in the AKC - they feel that it encourages breeding for beauty and not for function and health.
  4:50pm
AKC Dogs:

It is better to look good than to feel good, and dahling, I look wonderful!
  4:50pm
Cecile:

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels went right down the drain soon after their breed club joined the AKC - overbreeding and poor breeding highlighted many genetic problems.
  4:51pm
Bas, NL:

@Wendy Hey! Didn't know about your website.. 'sgreat!
  4:51pm
Cecile:

AKC Dog - you look MAH-vel-ous.
  4:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

Glad to be on the Cheese Side, Wendy. Thanks for the Mah-hone[?] rec! :)
  4:52pm
Cecile:

Julie, I want to go there just to eat the Mexi food there.
  4:53pm
julie:

it rules!
  4:54pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Mmm... Mexican food. If it were up to me, every day would be Cinco De Mayo.
  4:54pm
AKC Dogs:

We try to avoid running afoul intellectual property law, dahling. We may eat our own vomit, but we'd prefer not to touch lawyers with a ten-foot pole.
  4:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Bas: About your Clay "banner" from earlier...we should all hold up banners for Clay and our fav shows like soccer fans in the stands!
  4:55pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Thank you Bas and Spfld Matt! :-)

  5:04pm

  5:07pm
Matt from Springfield:

I'm a nervous perfectionist, and usually at work now, but at home I can relax a bit. If Clay's only taking calls until 6, I think I can make it today. (And Clay took my pledge on Julie's show...this time I'm taking it to the public!)

  6:04pm
phillip:

Good at holding your breath under water Matt
  6:04pm
julie:

Clay is the man
  6:06pm
other david:

You and Clay have great chemistry Julie, same with Ken earlier - and Fabio - you're all enthusiasts, you love the station, you love music, you're good folks and it shines through.

This is a special little place.
  6:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Fredericks: Now, is anyone besides Obama REALISTICALLY trying to get America back in shape? In a way he's already moved the (left half) of political discourse so that we're not cowering before Republicans anymore. Progressives still need to be more forceful, but at least we're moving past the low point of the Bush years.
  6:07pm
Cecile:

About Starcastle, I know who Starcastle are, I just wanted to know who from CBN tried to get you to like them - it must have been pre-Sex Pistols!
  6:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

@phillip: I reached 25 seconds underwater at the pool today!
(I'm trying to get back in practice; when I was 10 I could go over a minute and a half!)
  6:08pm
glenn:

hey julie, did you check out curved air?
  6:09pm

Think of starting your own show man?
  6:09pm

For those lovers of marijuana (and Clay!), check out his Apr 22 2010 Archive (Pot day in Union Square). Clay plays the entire "Tomorrow Never Knows" track, and two GREAT pro-pot songs by his old fav White Witch! VERY worth it!

  6:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

That reminds me Clay...I love White Witch whenever you play it. Is it available on CD? VINYL reissue better yet? I love them.

@Julie It's not "in the bag"--it's "in the pot"!
  6:15pm
phillip:

I wish i could comment on that!
  6:15pm

In radio, we're always potting things up.
  6:15pm
cheri:

hiya clay & julie ,,how are you two doing this evening??
  6:16pm
phillip:

Love the cutting on this show
  6:16pm
Clay:

Hi Cheri
  6:17pm
Clay:

Thanks Phillip!
  6:17pm
About Starcastle:

This was the mid 70s, not the later 70s. The guy brought home Starcastle, Richard Hell, and "Ariel". I guess that would be called eclectic.
  6:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

I'm liking DigiDusty™ shows--do you think there will be a day when all your cassettes meet their maker, and everything will have to be digital?
  6:22pm
3D:

Clays voice and words describe Americana so well, it transends political differences and relates to us all, in his April 15, 2010: A Trip From Audubon To Exira - Hometown Stories" piece.
He concludes with a description of that smalltown, 4th of July- one firework at a time-fireworks show, that we can nearly all relate to.
This recording is a real classic-
A spellbinding reading, and highly recommended (!)
  6:22pm
Clay:

IT ACTUALLY TAKES WAY LONGER DIGITALLY.
  6:22pm
Clay:

Oops. Caps.
  6:22pm
Listener Dave From Seattle:

I still record music on analog tape as well. Long live analog!
  6:23pm
hamburger / london:

tip of the hat to clay and danish blood :)
  6:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

@3D: Thank you, someone once rec'd that already, and I will back you up on the "Audubon to Exira" one (Goooooo Archive listening!)
  6:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yes, hamburgersen :)
  6:24pm
other david:

I love Clay's gentleness, whatever his feelings, he doesn't judge
  6:25pm
glenn:

i bought 150 random open reel tapes off a guy a couple months ago for 30 bucks, and i don't even have an open reel tape player anymore.
  6:25pm
Listener Dave From Seattle:

Don't throw them away whatever you do.
  6:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Someone needs to keep the flame going, glenn!
  6:25pm
other david:

And with the majority of people, that gentleness allows normal debate and discussion to happen, which is good for everyone :)
  6:26pm
julie:

I have a bunch of cassettes and I wanna get rid of a lot of them but like, who wants them?
  6:26pm
Clay:

TY Hamburger! Welkommen.
  6:26pm
Cecile:

I love this Ratt song.
  6:26pm
glenn:

  6:26pm
hamburger / london:

  6:26pm
other david:

julie - ask clay!
  6:26pm
cheri:

so clay & julie have you guys seen any good movies lately??
  6:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

@david: Yes, he's amazing! I don't know what more people haven't discovered this amazing personality, but those that have are HOOKED! :D
  6:27pm
cheri watcher:

This should be good.
  6:27pm
david:

Clay's been hitting home runs. Another great taped segment.
  6:27pm
glenn:

the meat purveyors do a bluegrass version of round and round. it's pretty great.
  6:28pm
Bas, NL:

I repair reel-to-reel taperecorders as a hobby..
  6:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

The summaries on the playlists are usually very good, saying everything the show is about. Clay's is no exception:
"Street interviews with everyone from the homeless to the glitterati. Live call-ins, hyper-editing, original fiction, and obscure vinyl exhumation. Clay's soft-spoken ways elicit love from guests and listeners alike." The only thing missing now is "chat with other DJs"!!
  6:30pm
david:

It was nice to put a voice to Matt from Springfield.
  6:31pm
3D:

As far as his musical preferences....
  6:32pm
Cecile:

later!
  6:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

I once posted this on 7SD, but since everyone heard my voice:

Someone caught me at the Rally For Sanity in October. (My hair was shorter then, as I was about to head off to steamy Thailand!)
  6:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Later Cecile!
  6:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Mungo Jerry had several hits in the UK; "In The Summertime" is the only one that was a hit in the US.
  6:34pm
other david:

@Matt - Clay could probably be making millions with his commercial weather voice, but... he stays on this wonderful station, that says it all :)

The Year of the Cat: the prior year (1975) in Vietnamese astrology (Year of the Rabbit in Chinese and others). "Modern Times" tour, starting to become a sensation. Peter White banged out the melody on a piano, and Al made 2 attempts at fitting lyrics before he found the current lyrics.

david:

miami sound machine!
  6:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

@other david: I think he loves it here as much as we love him here :)

Besides his "pop" hits from Time Passages, there's great historical folk rock with Alan Parsons production on that album. "Lonely Palace of Versailles", "Life in Dark Water", "The Man for All Seasons" (Yay to Julie for that!)
  6:38pm
julie:

yeah man for all seasons is a great song
  6:39pm
Clay:

Trying to hang in there. Dusty always suffers on these 4-hour things.
  6:39pm
other david:

What worries me most about Clay though, is he's turning me on to hair metal and prog rock.

I'm quite frankly disturbed by this development.
  6:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

It's funny though, Al grew up mostly in England, and has an English accent. But his singing voice has a twinge of Scottishness to it. Whereas many singers with Scottish accents sing without any particular accent (Gerry Rafferty, Liz Fraser).
  6:41pm
other david:

I'll call in one day, slightly typsy tonight (hey it's nearly 12 here!) but not typsy enough to have my voice added to the archives for all eternity
  6:43pm
other david:

aw, great call :D
  6:44pm
Kendall!:

woooooo! Georgia Tech!
  6:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

@OD: No one said that "The Magic of Clay" works in only positive ways :)

But please call--I don't call FMU shows often, but if I want to I go ahead. Next time there's a 3-6 (8-11) show with Clay, give it a try. One plus is that Clay doesn't have themes you need to stick with--just left field questions!
  6:46pm
