Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

As I'm listening to this, I'm kind of bumming, thinking about little sounds that I didn't have loud enough in the mix, or that I've inadvertently erased in the shuffle somewhere. Digital mixing is complex. So easy to trash everything with one bad move. I made a few. I get so obsessed. Flaws.

TDY - According to Wikipedia: "A temporary duty assignment (TDA), also known as "temporary additional duty" (TAD), "temporary duty travel" (TDT) or "temporary duty" (TDY, sometimes given backronym "temporary duty yonder"), refers to a United States Government employee travel assignment at a location other than the employee's permanent duty station. They are usually of relatively short duration, typically from two days to two months in length. Not all agencies use this designation. A temporary duty assignment can be to any location, be it 50 or 5,000 miles away, but they are all less than one year in duration."

It was released in 1962. The recording established the conventions of surf music and brought the concept to middle America. The instrumentals, such as “Let’s Go Trippin’” and “Misirlou,” were the most influential. The album was mostly recorded live at the Rendezvous Ballroom, but with some overdubs added in the studio."
Wow. Many days later, following one botched attempt to air this show (and the one before it), an earthquake and a hurricane ... I am finally finishing this playlist. I am so far behind! Kind of daunting. I guess summer finally caught up with me. Anyway ... I have really enjoyed working in the digital format, despite earlier trepidations. Not to say that I will stay there, though I'm not sure, I'm just playing it week-to-week. It takes so LONG to do a digital show. In reality, the reason I botched both of the last two shows was because they just weren't honestly ready yet. It takes two-weeks to do one properly, at least at my present level of editing ability. It also takes careful review because with all the tracks and edits - literally dozens of tracks and hundreds, maybe thousands of edits, there is much that can go wrong (and it did!!!!) I dig the challenge though, and hope it doesn't sound too antiseptic. I am trying to bring in lots of the familiar Dusty sounds to "warm things up." I'll get it right eventually. In the meantime, bear with me.

I really appreciate all your support. Just lately I've been getting lots of email and it feels really good to know you're out there and listening. If you'd like to email me, please do:

dusty@wfmu.org

I look forward to hearing from you. As I write this, it is 12:45am , September 1st, 2011. Psychological Summer is over. Fall on the way. Time is just going so fast, I really feel it .... the years ... the age ... the realities. I'll keep pumping shows out as long as I can, and as long as you're interested. I do enjoy making you happy, or whatever it is you feel when you listen to The Dusty Show. Fabio and Julie make nice contributions, too, and their friendship is invaluable.

I'd love to talk about Hurricane Irene, but I realize people will not read this playlist in a time sequence where bringing up the storm would makes sense. I am so totally reeling from the destruction that went down upstate. My wife and I go there a lot and where we like to go is right in the heart of the area most severely affected by the storm. I can't believe towns I knew are all but gone. It's so sad. Please help if you can. Here's one way - http://www.redcross.org/

Until next time Dusty listeners, take care and ...

Always Remember

  6:05pm
Clay:

Here.
  6:06pm
hopey:

I'm confused.
  6:06pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Hooray!
  6:07pm
Clay:

This is last week's show that crapped out. Lots of new stuff after the 15-mark. Sorry for the rerunnishness.
  6:07pm
hopey:

Ohhhh. I see.
  6:08pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

I was absent last week, so re-runs are good for me, at least. So, as I was saying before: Hooray! Yes! No!
  6:08pm
Clay:

Wendy I like this cheese called ... San Agura, or something like that. Maxi-Yum.
  6:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

Tea Party interview redux!

If I didn't say last week, I like this "Daisy Petal Pickin"
  6:10pm
Clay:

Ricky Dickens, Matt. A cover of a Jimmy Gilmer song. The "Sugar Shack" guy.
  6:11pm
hopey:

I thought that song sounded familiar!
  6:12pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Clay, St. Agour? That is totally maxi-yum! Semi-firm, aged sheep's milk, sweet and savory and complex, from the Basque region of France (the Pyrenees). If we're talking about the same cheese, it's no wonder why you love it. It's sooooo goooood! :-)
  6:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yes, I remember the "parents want to be friends, they don't want to be parents" answer now. Really good point about modern life.
  6:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Wendy and Clay for the Maxi-Yum cheese recs! (I hope "Maxi-Yum" catches on!)
  6:16pm
Ugh:

This guy is so ignorant.
  6:18pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Me, too, Matt from Spfld! Clay invented it. Maxi-Yum. I love it.
  6:19pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Another word that needs greater usage: tuchus. Cuter than some of the alternatives.
  6:20pm
Clay:

Thanks for the comments. Kind of scarcely populated today.
  6:21pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Everyone is battening down the hatches for the hurricane, Clay. And there's always the folks who are too busy or shy to comment.

Story on that guy? Did he look like how he sounded?
  6:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sure, the British group Apollo 100. "Joy" has been featured in "Boogie Nights", "40 Year Old Virgin" and other popular movies (including some, I'm sure, without a sex theme!)
  6:24pm
jk:

i am happy you did not forsake this show
  6:25pm

THanks, JK. A million edits.

  6:27pm
Clay:

Write Joe. He is so cool and he'd love to hear from you.
  6:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for featuring Joe. The disabled are particularly marginalized in the media! When you finalize this playlist, include his FB url under that section of interview.
  6:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

@moose: More expensive there than I remember in Radford, VA only 5 years ago!
  6:29pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

I missed if you said which part of Iowa this was from.
  6:29pm
Clay:

I was just thinking of how well Kenny Rogers could have sang this song.
  6:30pm
Clay:

Dave, the music is from a Bargain Barn in Iowa. The interviews were done in the Catskills area of NY.
  6:31pm
Dale:

Hey clay. I've spent a lot of time in Roxbury. Hope you had breakfast at Bud's. Pretty place.
  6:32pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

Oh OK thanks. I thought you were talking to Iowa people.
  6:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

Re: Kenny Rogers: solo country or First Edition years? Either one would work for that last song.
  6:33pm
Clay:

Dale ... Delaware Co. is great. Ripe for fracking, though.
  6:33pm
Joe Pesci Mode:

NYC does not equal NY.
  6:35pm
Joe Pesci Mode:

Wow.

LOL Obama hates the US. Of course!
  6:36pm
moose:

hella wow
  6:36pm
Clay:

Bass overload!
  6:36pm
Dale:

Coldest temp I ever experienced was Roxbury...thirteen below and still dropping when I went to bed.
  6:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Dave: Though he DOES have the Magic Wand to bring all the jobs back, he just chooses not to use it, being that he hates the US.
  6:37pm
Clay:

-60 windchill in Omaha I lived through once, Dale.
  6:37pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

Yes, the magic job wand! He needs to get on that.
  6:39pm
Momo:

That's about as social as you can get!
  6:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

Maybe he left it at the basketball courts. Or the golf course--I'm on Fort Belvoir right now, and he regularly plays golf here. I'll take a look and see if I can find it...
  6:39pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

At least we know Glen Beck would never lie to you. We can sleep well knowing that.
  6:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

Clay's Insecurities: "Whoops, seems like I'm asking silly questions. Might be alienating some people..."
  6:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

C.B. Savage? We need that full song played sometime!!
  6:42pm
Clay:

I noticed some errant levels in the show so far. I have a hard time hearing bass frequencies on my small home stereo. Then I hear it here, and I'm like ... wow ... bass freakout. A couple of drum tracks left out, too. The last 20-minutes is more wide-open. Thanks for your patience during my digital experiments.
  6:43pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

This show gots the bumps.
  6:43pm
Momo:

MOOOOOO
  6:43pm
other david:

*tips hat*

good evening folks
  6:44pm
Clay:

Hey O.D.
  6:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

Top o' the evening to you, other david!
  6:47pm
Momo:

clay, what are you using, tape deck, digital?
  6:48pm
Dale:

Clay -- we're all paying attention to the content. Oh, and Diary is the best song on that album.
  6:48pm
Clay:

Mixing taped interviews and some records to Macbook Pro (Garageband). Creating most of the backing music, or mutating records. Zillions of tracks and edits. Not better than analog, but more tracks is fun, Cross-fading, etc. Actually it employs much of the same analog things as an ana-dusty.
  6:50pm
hopey:

He who has the gold makes the rules?
  6:51pm
Momo:

do you add the music live?
  6:51pm
Eric:

Now listeners from around the world can hear what it is were up against here.
  6:51pm
Clay:

Not yet, Momo. But I have added instruments in the past.
  6:53pm
Miller Lite:

Idiots. Even if Obama wanted to do anything he's just one guy. The second you step foot in that oval office, it's like, oh shit. We are all owned and there's nothing you can do about it.
  6:53pm
Momo:

thanks clay, I've been listening for years!!! Talk to you soon piece!
  6:53pm
other david:

I find Clays interviews soothing, even when they're with people I would have fundamental disagreements with. It's not confrontational - all political/social discourse should be like this.
  6:54pm
Clay:

It was nice to interview some Republicans and Tea Partiers. I am generally left-of-center, but it's good to not preach to the choir all the time.
  6:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

"TDY" = "Temporary Duty", a business trip. :)
We say that all the time in Federal City, DC Area. Military and civil.
  6:55pm
Dale:

I've been to flea markets where guys are selling giant swords. Don't really see the market for samurai swords, but hey...
  6:56pm
J J:

I like this guy. Seein' through the bullshit.
  6:57pm
moose:

yeah this fella's all right
  6:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

And I myself like knives. Knives are neutral, it's entirely up the person controlling it. (Good that he requires an ID. I thought of a South Park episode though, when he said "otherwise you need a parent"!)
  6:58pm
Dale:

Guns and planes and bombs are neutral, too.
  6:58pm
Clay:

Gotta make room for Night People. Thanks for listening and hanging out everyone. Always remember.
  6:59pm
moose:

educational! thanks! and fancy too.
  6:59pm

Goodnight Clay, great show as ever, always love hearing you on the air :)
