A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

So the dudes in the picture are all like, "Hey, you're blue, what you doin hanging with our lady?" and the blue guy is like, "Back off man take a hit off this shit and chill the fuck out." and the other dude on the left is like, "I'm goin take this negligee off and get involved." The monkeys obviously don't give a crap and the peacock got hot-boxed and getting blown away by it's own feathers.

I spent a couple of years teaching kids in northern England the Ramayana story in the form of a theatre piece and almost perfected the way I first told them it, but Nathan just well and truly kicked my arse with his awesome summation!

careful bw, my mispronunciations could cause a manifestation
  9:41am
Nathan:

@groucho I was just taking the piss. The actual story is obviously more interesting. Though I'm retroactively disappointed they didn't have the Ramayana in my elementary school library. Only the Greek, Roman, Nordic and Egyptian mythologies.

AWESOME version of "Somebody to Love"! Nothing like hearing a worn-out song in a fresh context. For instance, I thought I didn't like the song "Light My Fire" until I heard Eleanor Friedberger sing it on the Portlandia tour. It sounded pretty good.
  9:53am
groucho:

@nathan I know you were taking the piss, but your version would have gotten through to the kids alot quicker! we didn't have it in our schools either, part of the reason we developed the project, plus we live in a BNP stronghold (like, lots of racist political types have power) so we wanted to flaunt Diwali under their noses & educate their kids without them knowing. we got to thousands of them over a couple of years too!!! muahahaha
  9:54am

Somebody to love! wow what a version, tis on my list of things to hunt down now

Trouble - thanks for that Nina Paley shout out and her animated version of the Ramayana. She deserves all the attention for that animated movie she made. Side note - one light fixture is actually installed on my wall and works!

@groucho I understand your motivations... and they're good ones at that. Exposure is the best policy. You can't fear something you've encountered and vaguely understand, it's no longer 'alien'. But yeah, you've gotta speak their language, as well as make them laugh. Funnily enough I had a dream last night about encountering some near-albino BNP child who was mocking a Morrissey tour in the UK because 'e's a poof'. His dad was there as well... strange dream. Also involved flying a Cessna and being stopped & harassed by Moroccan police for landing in the wrong place. But ultimately all those dream events were potential nightmares that were diffused by diplomacy.

@Nathan wow. wait, what? haha I love how dreams seem apropos of nothing. do you have a dream diary? after a while everything becomes clear, or doesn't but it'll make more sense, if that makes sense
  10:19am
Magda:

I've been in a dreamy music kinda mood. Hence now why I'm obsessed with Alice Coltrane.
  10:20am
Cecile:

I was making out with Taika Waititi, director of Eagle vs Shark and BOY the other night in my dreams. I was quite angry at the alarm when it woke me. Even better, i was thin in my dream.
  10:23am
Cecile:

because I could find nice pants for under $20.
  10:23am

@cecile have you tried Lucid Dreaming, where you can control your dreams? google it, it's 2 mins work a day for a month or two then boom, you're banging Taika in no time. I fly alot in my dreams. best.feeling.ever

Trouble, loving this funk/disco set!
  10:24am

no kidding? Taika and $19.99 pants every night? nice.
  10:24am
Deepak:

unmistakably ELO
  10:27am
Nathan:

@groucho I should keep one. Jung was into dreams and I just finished Man and His Symbols late last year. I generally keep track mentally and adjust accordingly without fussing too much over them. I've had a lot of flying dreams lately, which I haven't had for a very long while. But that's to probably do with the fact that I'm heading into a much desired career change.
  10:27am

Does the last train to London stop at Clarkesville? One more thought on Rahsaan -- on the same album, there is a soul-stirring version of "Rugged Old Cross".

Hi T & all. Herzog's 'Cave of Forgotten Dreams' has quite an impressive soundtrack. DVD extra features composer Ernst Reijseger & his 5-string cello. It's a knockout.

Love the ELO Trouble, they are totally under rated. You may want to pull out ELO II some time, just for the amazing song "Kuiama." A huge 11 minute jam. It sounds like the band doesn't want it to end.

  11:02am

Medieval Woman?

Is she related to Merkin Woman by the Guess Who?

Medieval Woman sounds like Celtic Woman - probably a big flashy touring madrigal show.

Trouble - is this Time Zone track on the Celluloid label? Worked there in the late 80s, right about when "World Destruction" came out.

This track set me back in the WABAC machine for a spell..
  11:22am
Jennique:

interesting factoid I gleaned from NY1 news this morning - Tim Tebow used the word excited more times in his press conference than the Pointer Sisters did in their song I'm So Excited.

  11:30am
ken:

very pretty concon anne
  11:34am
Dave B:

Cecile - the name rings a bell. I'd have to dig thru the remnants that I still have from those days (late 83 - 85). My time there was primarily stockroom and postering. Good times none the less.
  11:34am
Brian C.:

The cool thing about thinking it was "medieval woman" was that I was in 10th grade when I was into that LP, learning about the dark ages from a VERY boring teacher. Song kept going through my head while taking endless notes…
  11:36am
Cecile:

they were a 50s-style r'n'b band that was inexplicably popular in NYC for a hot minute. I liked their spin off band, the Watusis, a lot better. They were both Ann Arbor bar bands in the best and worst senses - they did the best, most obscure covers, but their originals didn't live up to that.
  11:37am
Jennique:

Brian C: I had a similar problem with a chemistry teacher when the song "Promises, Promises" came out by Naked Eyes. I kept humming "Molecules, Molecules" in my head...
  11:41am

now you've piqued my interest Cecile...
