Listener comments!

  5:44pm Matt from Springfield:

Happy belated birthday, Doug!
I recall seeing that tonight's show will feature Live *in* Africa recordings?
  5:45pm listener james from westwood:

howdy matt and all early-week drummer-somers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Doug Schulkind:

M from S and LJ from W, it's a pleasure! Yes, all of tonight's selections were recorded on African soil. Not literally, of course, because that would be unsanitary for heaven's sake.
  5:49pm Matt from Springfield:

Howdy LJfW!
I had thought of "Sum of Drummers" before, but I like "Drummer-Somers" better!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Doug Schulkind:

And our sister show in France: Le Drum du Somme
  5:51pm listener james from westwood:

the sum of the drummers is always greater than its parts.
  5:52pm Matt from Springfield:

Early-weekers, that's a good one as well. This 6-7 pm slot was actually the first version GTDS I heard; I started listening about a year before Doug moved to Studio P, and didn't get around to Fri mornings. But since I'm a regular fan of Brian Turner's show, I stuck around after, and liked what I heard!
  5:53pm listener james from westwood:

will enjoy the spicy backdrop while i'm making a mighty batch of chili.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Doug Schulkind:

Listener James's menu:
Chili today, hot tamale.

(Sorry)
  5:59pm listener james from westwood:

that just makes me all the hungrier!
  6:00pm ndbob:

evening Doug and everyone!
  6:04pm Artie:

Tripoli Taco Tuesday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello ndbob and Artie!
  6:06pm ndbob:

just finished my microwaved dinner
  6:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Evening Bob, Artie!

Yeah, the State Dept used to sponsor tons of overseas tours to showcase American culture. Cab Calloway did a noted international tour of Porgy and Bess in the 50s through this program.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Doug Schulkind:

As you'll hear on many of these recordings, it was de rigueur to not just perform for African audiences, but to perform with local artists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Doug Schulkind:

If this Fania record sounds warped, it was the master tapes that wilted!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Listen to the adoring crowd! What a thrill it must have been.
  6:14pm ndbob:

what country was this recorded in?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Doug Schulkind:

Zaire
  6:18pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, Sun Ra performing in Egypt. The only way that would be even more awesome, is if Sun Ra performed in Egypt, on another planet, in another dimension of mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Doug Schulkind:

The drummer Salah Ragab is sitting in with the Arkestra here!
  6:21pm Artie:

Safe to say that Sun Ra only ever performed in another dimension of mind.
  6:21pm Matt from Springfield:

Ah! "an Egyptian drummer and musician credited with founding Egyptian jazz." Glad I know of Mr. Ragab now. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Doug Schulkind:

This next selection from Yusef Lateef is available online for free. I shared all the tracks for it on WFMU's blog a few years ago. Just go to Beware of the Blog and search for "Hikima."

  6:22pm ndbob:

agreed Artie
  6:24pm Matt from Springfield:

Yes! Yusef Lateef!

Many dimension(s) crossed by Sun Ra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Matt, the label Art Yard put out an amazing LP by Salah Ragab & the Cairo Jazz Band called "Egyptian Jazz." A gorgeous thing it is.
  6:35pm northguineahills:

Checking in..... (been here since 6)
  6:38pm Matt from Springfield:

Ouch! There's a lot of mass-produced vinyl that can be thrown out, and rescued by someone else if they're willing. But Hikima?!?! Isn't that on some kind of Endangered/Culturally Valuable/Preserve-Do-Not-Throw-Away List?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Doug Schulkind:

NGH is nigh!
  6:39pm Matt from Springfield:

Anyways, TINA TURNER! Takin' an Africa turn!

Hello, quiet NGH.

  6:43pm Ricardo Montalban:

Thank you for playing Porky Pig, Doug!
  6:44pm Matt from Springfield:

One of Africa's proudest descendants, triumphant return!! King o' Soul!
  6:44pm Ricardo Montalban:

BOZO Approved!
This bozo APPROVES!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Doug Schulkind:

My pleasure, Ricardo. I refrained from playing side two.
  6:46pm ndbob:

anyone see the documentary of the Ali-Foreman fight with clips from this concert?
  6:46pm Ricardo Montalban:

Eugene Chadbourne sampled heavily from that disc on his wonderful 1985 LP He Is Insane
  6:47pm Ricardo Montalban:

ndbob: That sounds fascinating! Available for viewing?
  6:48pm northguineahills:

I saw that doc not too long ago.
  6:49pm ndbob:

It's on Netflix instant - probbaly still there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of Bozo, Ricardo, I assume you are referring to this:

bit.ly...
  6:50pm Ricardo Montalban:

YES!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Doug Schulkind:

Roberta sang this with a mono recorder in the depths of an old slave prison on the Ghanian coast. For some reason, she insisted that her songs be removed from the CD and DVD re-issues of this concert.
  6:53pm Matt from Springfield:

This is one of my fav spirituals ever--just playing an a capella version of this would be amazing, but WOW. What an atmosphere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Doug Schulkind:

And now... to hear this particular song about love and racial harmony, sung in the land of Apartheid. Almost unimaginable.
  6:56pm listener james from westwood:

bloody awesome show and concept, my man!
  6:57pm Alan R:

love this mix! nice show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Doug Schulkind:

If you gotta be awesome, be bloody awesome (I have always said).

Thanks Alan R! Glad you're aboard the good ship.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Timmy Thomas's backing band here was a South African band called Spirits Rejoice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Doug Schulkind:

I will be sharing this record in Mining the Audio Motherlode a week from tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Doug Schulkind:

If you have to have it sooner, email me.
  7:02pm ndbob:

great recording here - and great show!
  9:43pm Van in DC:

Happy Birthday Yesterday Mr Drummer.
  9:54pm Doug Schulkind:

There is one slice of cake left, Van. I'll upload it!
