Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

  12:21pm

  12:23pm
Cheri Pi:

This is what radio should sound like. Hello from Cincinnati.
  12:23pm
Danne D:

Now I'm realizing that "Summer Breeze" prominently uses toy piano in it. This has been a very revealing show.

  12:27pm
Cheri Pi:

  12:27pm
dinatekno:

Wow! It's like I'm back in 1975 listening to the radio. I was 13 back then and as addicted to the music as I am now. Thanks for brining up such fond memories and feelings Dusty.
  12:28pm
Danne D:

God Bless the Internets - here's sorta proof about Ochs' (understandable) influence on Denver: "

Actually, when Denver joined the Trio, he was replacing Chad Mitchell himself, and the group then became just the "Mitchell Trio." The song that John sang to sort of introduce himself to the public as the new kid in the Trio was "That's the Way It's Gonna Be" by Bob Gibson and Phil Ochs"

dinatekno:

We need some Doobie Bros - Black Water!
  12:28pm
MD:

Other freeform radio stations:"hey I like this DJ can we have him?"
FMU:"Sorry my brother...you have to get your own!"
WAIT...THERE'S ONLY ONE FREEFORM STATION!!!!
  12:29pm
12539:

Clay should offer a transistor radio for his premium one of these years.
  12:29pm
Duane:

"Searchin"! Now that's what the Eff im talkin about C P!!!
  12:29pm
Danne D:

I think I'd love to hear Clay and Glen Jones rap about music for like a day or a week or a month or so.
  12:29pm
DCE:

David Soul...bwaaaaahaaaaaaa!
  12:30pm
DCE:

how bout some pancakes with that SYRUP
  12:30pm
Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

I love that you play stuff I used to have on 8-track.
  12:31pm
paula pc:

@ 12539: if that transistor radio could magically stream an AM station from the early 70s...now wouldn't that be something
  12:31pm
Mike East:

@Danne D - I don't think I'd be able to get anything done for that month because I would be glued to the radio.
  12:33pm
octy:

I'm at work all harried, but really digging your Soothing Sounds For Adults- music calling forth the atmospheric memory of slow living.
  12:33pm
Danne D:

"She was 31 and I was 17" - sounds like today's tabloids
  12:33pm
Mike East:

...could throw X.Ray in there, too, for comic relief.
  12:34pm
12539:

A special transistor case with a CASSETTE inside...
  12:34pm
Bob perry:

Pure pop for now people 1st time listener and totally hooked. Would love to hear anything by Gallery~Dusty Springfield ~Johnny Rivers ~Millenium or anything on Project 3 label..

  12:35pm
Keith in VT:

Chase the boy in you away... saw the sunlight as a man... nice euphemisms.
  12:36pm
Bogey:

would love to hear some America (Horse with no Name)
  12:36pm
Danne D:

@Mike East I don't doubt X.Ray's musical knowledge.
  12:37pm
Danne D:

Playing the clown isn't the same as being the clown.

  12:41pm
MD:

  12:41pm
Danne D:

Bas is here :)
  12:42pm
Danne D:

Yup, fred, went to school there.
  12:43pm
tim from champaign:

There needs to be a roundtable discussion with Clay, Jonesy, X-Ray and Billy Jam.
  12:43pm
Detroit Mac:

Summer memory: 1965 - working with migrants, picking cherry peppers, near Midland Michigan, listening to CKLW on the transistor. Paid 85 cents per bushel. Heavy play rotation of Motown and the Beach Boys.
  12:44pm
fred:

Someone there has been ruining my summers for years... J Stephen Downie has kept me at work whenever I had a shot at getting vacation time
  12:44pm
Mike East:

@tim from champaign - a good idea for Sound & Vision Fest if they have one this year.
  12:44pm
dinatekno:

@tim from champaign - EXCELLENT IDEA!!!
  12:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

Summer of 78 in Beantown listnin to BCN w Duane Ingalls Glascock (Dig)

efd:

LIME!!!
  12:50pm
fred:

@tim: nothing personal, mind you, it's just that his MIREX deadlines dictate my work schedule. From what I heard, he's a cool guy. But I'm just a grunt, no paid trip to Miami for me
  12:50pm
efd:

@Bob Perry, any chance you are the one-time Boston area record promo dude of the same name?
  12:50pm
paula pc:

what efd said!!!!!!
  12:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

This is like a "Blue Monday" for the 80s funk circuit. With a bit of "Escape" thrown in for good measure.
  12:52pm
Bob perry:

You are correct efd. Living in Miami dealing in rare records.
Avatar 12:52pm
monica:

@efd, i knew i saw you on that float yesterday!
  12:54pm
efd:

whoa! no kidding! I was an intern at WBZ in the spring of 1978 - wish I still had those Ian Dury sex/drugs/rock/roll buttons you gave me back then! :) (but I still have all the Arista promo LPs and singles)
  12:55pm
fred:

@tim: do you know Mert Bay? I've heard he's a real cool guy to hang out with
  12:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

Bowie I haven't heard--I was waiting for a vocal, but instrumental?! Never knew Bowie did any!
  12:57pm
efd:

@Matt, get yourself a copy of 'Low' immediately.
  12:58pm
Van in DC:

@Matt - that was new to me too!
  12:58pm
still b/p:

Was just thinking recently about listening to all of Low again, which I ain't done in many years. And years ago, I thought if he'd called the track A New Career In Every New Town, the acronym would ANCIENT. Ho-WHOOOA!
  12:58pm
Danne D:

Clay has accidentally brought about a family reunion (or a few) here on the comments board today. :)
  12:59pm
fred:

Clay is either prone to accidents or a genius at making what he does look like ones
  1:00pm
Bob perry:

Hey That's so cool i remember handing those out to Jim McMann who i'm still in touch with. His facebook photo was taken by my wife at my home w Bob Marley promoting the Uprising LP. I still have a t that Ian sent stating The obscure is more interesting than the banal. I remember the night at the Paradise like it was yesterday w the Blockheads opening for Patti . Nice to hear from you.
  1:01pm
tim from champaign:

@Fred. Yeah, Mert is friends with a number of my friends. He is a cool guy.
  1:05pm
fred:

@tim: glad to hear that. All I get from him boils down to "your program crashed", but he's been nice about it. And I only heard good things from the researchers who actually got to meet him.
  1:07pm
efd:

@Bob, very cool running into you here! I remember Jim well; please give him my best, although I doubt he'd remember me all this time later!
  1:08pm
fred:

@tim: take a look at Nat Roe's archives, if you know these people, there might be a few familiar names in there too
  1:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Clay is like that--always bringing people together. And reuniting those who have drifted apart! :)

@efd: Will listen to Bowie's Low! @Van: If I listen to it first, I'll tell you how that is! :)
  1:10pm
revaaron:

can you ask jim when CAP/new EAS is suppose to be in place? end of the month, right? Or did congress push it back?
  1:10pm
Bob perry:

@efd I will and it's great to hear from you. All the best
  1:11pm
MD:

JIM ROCKS!!!!!
  1:11pm
Emily:

that was beautiful!
  1:12pm
Danne D:

I don't think I'd do well in a Clay interview.
  1:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hooray for the Jim interview!
"Clay Pigeon's Voices behind WFMU series, Vol. 8"
  1:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Clay has talked to me before...I don't think it's possible to have a poor Clay interview. He's very...I don't know, subtly in tune with how you're feeling, helps you talk around things you'd rather not say and make you comfortable with how you are.
  1:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Clay's soft-spoken ways elicit love from guests and listeners alike."
"The Magic of Clay", I call it!
  1:15pm
tim from champaign:

@fred - took a quick look but didn't recognize any names. I'll keep my eyes peeled in the future though. Good to know there are other FMU listeners in the area.

Van in DC:

Wow, a guitar legend. Nice to hear Al being played on FMU!
  1:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

Al DiMeola, I think I've heard this as background music in Clay's programs before.
And I loved that Abominable Twitch! Good find Clay!
  1:20pm
fred:

@tim: the area I meant was academic, not geographic. I work at a French research institute about music called IRCAM, and it's a very small world in that field
  1:22pm
Progfeed:

My 70's brain is being jazz-rock fused!
  1:25pm
Danne D:

@Matt I've spoken with Clay and that is fun, but I'd fail the interview.
  1:27pm
Mike East:

hey, its that song from the Terre T. theme, right??
  1:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

Arista Records: "The label was founded in 1974 by Clive Davis" No wonder there seem to be so many records on Arista from the late 70s.
  1:28pm
fred:

Proof of Clay's bad influence: most of my bosses are German, and the word "perpendicular" comes to my mind sometimes when I talk to them.
  1:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

Radio Free Culture, NOT "Culture Free Radio"!!!
  1:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sounds great Benjamen, hopefully everyone with get great guests for that!

At least Archive.org preserves it in a (mostly) easy to find place.

  1:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

@dale: Wow, archive.org has online stations now? I know you used to have to DL them in a compatible format, now they have a Flash player for viewing them online. But if they have stations, that sounds even better!

matt, get a roku box. you can stream netflix if you want but it has a lot of free public domain 'channels'. archive.org and pub-d-hub are the best.
  1:45pm
Erella inToronto:

Great show though I thought you were putting the poor IT guy on the spot.
WOuld you find some Robert Wyatt to play for me?
  1:45pm
Mike East:

My uncle got one of them there roku boxes. He keeps telling me I should get one since I don't have cable. I'm thinking about it once the bluray player inevitably craps out.
  1:47pm
Cecile:

oh, Clay. Kansas?
You need to play some Blue Oyster Cult to repent.
  1:48pm
KP:

I remember when Rolling Stone's first big book came out. Had what purported to be the "only known photo of Ian Hunter without his sunglasses." Huge full page picture, obviously not Hunter. It was Mick Box, ugliest man in rock.
  1:48pm
Cecile:

phoeey, stream is being crabby today.
  1:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi erella!
Jim said that he "was game", but he probably didn't anticipate the depth and honesty of Clay's questions. Some people on the street end up being reluctant interviewees, while others are eager to spill what's on their mind.
  1:49pm
Mark in DC:

Bad news from here. Paul Sears (drummer, The Muffins) lost his son, Niall, last night fighting in Afghanistan. Music community here in mourning. You can look him up on FB. RIP, Niall.
  1:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: BOC rocks! Are they a Midwestern band too? :)
  1:50pm
dale:

you can buy it as a netgear branded box at best buy and radio shack, but don't know if the channels are the same - should be
  1:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

Nope, BOC's solidly Long Island!
  1:50pm
Danne D:

@Cecile - What's the Matter With Kansas? :)
  1:51pm
octy:

Bubble Puppy and then Kansas, very Beaker Street.
  1:51pm
Danne D:

That's awful Mark :(
  1:52pm
Cecile:

man, Mark, that is a sad.
hahahahaha, matt.
Danne, do you have six hours?
  1:52pm
WRECKEDUMB:

man Deep Purple Mark II killed!!! I bought this chick I know "in Rock" at an Atlanta record store over the weekend when I was down there for Iron Maiden n Alice Cooper
  1:53pm
Cecile:

I can see Gillen's influence on Clay's impromptu singing.
  1:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mark: Terrible news. And I was just listening to the Muffins being interviewed on "Echoes" last night. Prayers go out to Niall and all who knew and loved him.
  1:55pm
jt:

damn i forgot this song is so good. now i want to go home so i call pull out my lp and rock out to the mule.
  1:56pm
Pete from Boston (and NJ):

On days like today, I find myself wishing WFMU was broadcasting on AM.
  1:56pm
Danne D:

@Cecile (actually was a book pun)
I think if we conversed 6 hours about Kansas, we'd reach the point of know return :)
  1:57pm
Cecile:

hahahhahahahahahaha
  1:57pm
fred:

@Mark: terrible. I hope he's one of the last to fall, though I guess I know better.
  1:57pm
Cheri Pi:

Cecile!
  1:57pm
Julian:

When you said "favorite Deep Purple song", I was hoping to hear child in time, but this is good
  1:58pm
Cecile:

Pete, Clay's show reminds me of when hipster DJs would do the "late night" (8:30 - 10:30) shifts on the weekend on WHDF-Houghton. they had one of those licenses where they had to stop broadcasting at sundown.

Hey, Cheri!
  1:59pm
Smiling Ass/assin:

70's Prog Rules>Disneyland/world.
  1:59pm
mrmucho:

great set, Clay
  1:59pm
dc pat:

hmm, might be time for me to get into Deep Purple..
  2:01pm
KP:

DP was better with Rod Evans, Hush!
  2:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

Cecile doesn't bail on you, Clay! She always leaves right after 6. But she always checks in with you. AND, to prove it, Cecile always sticks around when you do a 12-3 or 3-6.
  2:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

And hey Cheri π !!!!!
  2:02pm
WRECKEDUMB:

KISS has been my favorite band since 1978. Get up and get yer grandma outta here. If there ever was a male movement, KISS would be it's soundtrack.
  2:03pm
Cecile:

Okay, smart people - how can I get really smart really fast in intro algebra? I gotta take an Accuplacer test on Saturday to get out of it for school. I am working my way through a couple of algebra iPod apps, but it's so YUK. I only like geometry and story problems, I guess.

YES.
  2:03pm
other david:

was having a crappy day. but you've cheered me right up, clay.

thanks :)
  2:03pm
Cecile:

I have Kiss ALive and Double Platinum. I spent seventy-five cents for them. that's the right price for all the Kiss you really need.
  2:03pm
mrmucho:

clay, help us out on what "he's worth a deuce" actually means...
  2:04pm
Cheri Pi:

Matt!!!
  2:05pm
Mark in DC:

@all I'll pass along yr condolences if the opportunity comes up, thanks.
  2:05pm
WRECKEDUMB:

He's worth a Deuce....he's equal to his old lady?
  2:06pm
Cecile:

thanks, Mark.
my nephew is in active reserve right now and my friend's daughter just came home, so my thoughts are with all the military families out there.
  2:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

TROWER POWER!
  2:07pm
WRECKEDUMB:

Gene $immons has stated that the riff was lifted from Bitch by The Stones.
  2:07pm
Cecile:

WRECKEDDUMB, please format your answer in the form of an equation, please.
  2:07pm
Maynard:

OK... Now, I'm actually feeling anxious because I'm the last one of my friends who's still a virgin!
  2:07pm
Matt from Springfield:

Welcome OD!
  2:08pm
dale:

i'll bet fabio is secretly listening and playing air guitar.
  2:08pm
dc pat:

every time I hear this tune I almost like Trower....almost.
  2:09pm
Van in DC:

Holy cow.
  2:09pm
dinatekno:

BOBBY GENTRY!!!!! I love you Clay...really, REALLY love you!!
  2:09pm
Danne D:

This has me thinking of Ms. Cantrell :)
  2:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Ode to Billie Joe"! Always a great choice.
  2:09pm
geokopp:

I love ode to billy joe!!!!
  2:09pm
dc pat:

Hendrix/Trower= Stevie Ray Vaughn
  2:10pm
Mike East:

@Cecile, I hear ritalin works for the kids these days when they need to cram.
  2:11pm
Cecile:

Hendrix>Trower

I am taking it. My husband calls it my math pills
  2:11pm
Mike East:

LOL...math pills.
  2:12pm
Billy Joe:

Hey! I didn't jump off no dang bridge! I was pushed by my half cousin zeke
  2:12pm
Billy Joe:

Hey! I didn't jump off no dang bridge! I was pushed by my half cousin zeke
  2:12pm
fred:

I love this song. Always reminds me of Laura Cantrell. I miss her show.
  2:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

My Dad pointed out to me how besides Billie Joe, friend Tom and brother's wife Becky Thompson, no one else is "named" in the song.
  2:13pm
Cecile:

I think it was a baby.

Oh, dear god no. Aiiiiiiieeeeee.
  2:13pm
Bob perry:

Brilliant. I was listening to her doing Okolona River Bottom band last night Boston Bob from Ft Lauderdale.
  2:13pm
Keith in VT:

An unborn baby is what was tossed of that bridge is my guess.
  2:14pm
geokopp:

the urban myth : they were throwing a baby from the bridge.
  2:14pm
PJ:

Clay, I'm pretty sure they dropped a bag of Kansas records off that bridge.
  2:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

Penned by Shel Silverstein, just as I thought.
(He composed very many country songs, particularly for Dr. Hook and Bobby Bare).
  2:15pm
Danne D:

Mac Killed this song during the '11 Hoof N Mouth :)
http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/39546
  2:15pm
dc pat:

man, nothing like Clay to make you feel like you're living in a different decade/century...
  2:15pm
Cecile:

Story problem:
How much does the narrator pay for the phone call total? How money per minute?
  2:16pm
Danne D:

Is this a clue - perhaps Sylvia was dumped off the bridge?
  2:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: I notice how Mac always performs great songs, closer to the modern era. Shows you another side of himself every year!
  2:17pm
Cecile:

PJ - that was the right answer!
  2:18pm
Danne D:

@Matt - I think Wildfire is probably my favorite of his :)
  2:19pm
Cecile:

what is the square root of the times Michael Murphy keeps yowling "she keeps calling wiiiiiiiiildfire" in the song?
  2:20pm
Danne D:

8 Something?
  2:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Clay: Have you listened to the "WTNG FM 89.9" album yet? It's a brand new, 2012 album, designed to sound like a late 70s radio station sampler cassette. I love it--it's not "ha-ha" funny, but it's positively DEAD ON parodies/tributes to the mainstream radio sound of that time! I highly recommend!
  2:21pm
fred:

I remember seeing a dance show set to Ode To Billie Joe, and it was just great. Jan Fabre was his provocative self, but the material kept him in check just enough.
  2:21pm
Cecile:

8x + I am sick of math.
  2:22pm
dc pat:

NO Hendrix DIVIDED BY Trower equals Vaughn
  2:23pm
still b/p:

"...in a binomial, she was lost...
She ran callin'...
  2:23pm
Cecile:

that is a find, Clay.
  2:24pm
dc pat:

For the love of zeus! Hendrix exists on a whole different plane, way out beyond Trower or Vaughn. Jeeze-o-man, the slash (/) is "divided by.."
  2:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Whoa, things are heating up in the WFMU "music math" community!

(If the conversation about "music math" heats at a constant rate of +2°C every 10 minutes, and the ambient temperature is 22°C... :)
  2:25pm
Cecile:

@dcp or in a gay fictional relationship with....
  2:25pm
Ex-Mother:

Was Jimmy Carl Black in this band?
  2:26pm
Cecile:

...matt we will all be boiled alive within 3x - 72 minutes.
  2:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

WHITE WITCH! Thanks for introducing me to this Tampa area band! I snagged two of their albums on iTunes!!

And I like "Class of 2000", very Mott the Hoople-ish. But, I was in the Class of 2003! And things still didn't turn out this interesting for us!! :)
  2:26pm
Bob perry:

Hey Clay Geronimo Black = Jimmy Carl Black The indidn of the group
LOL from Miami
  2:28pm
Cecile:

you guys should do this for Hoof and Mouth.
  2:30pm
Cecile:

Clay, this calls for a little Jackyl "Chainsaw".
  2:31pm
tim from champaign:

Ronnie Garvin? Is it the same "Hands of Stone" Ronnie Garvin who wrestled for Georgia Championship Wrestling in the early 80s?
  2:31pm
seang:

Alligator Alley!
  2:32pm
efd:

Thank you for indulging.
  2:32pm
Danne D:

All these references to Math makes me think of these great bumpers that EFD has played on his show:

http://wfmu.org/flashplayer.php?version=2&show=33940&archive=57380&starttime=0:22:15
  2:33pm
Cecile:

that sounded like Polk Salad Annie crossed with AC/DC, I liked it.
  2:33pm
DCE:

"summerize" things for us
  2:34pm
dc pat:

summary: / = "divided by"
  2:34pm
Bob perry:

  2:35pm
DCE:

  2:36pm
Cecile:

@bob perry, right on.
  2:36pm
John YaYa:

***John Smallberries!*** Are you still in this same dimension?
Clay, sorta good show, you ain't no Irene. You're good w/ Fabio, tho. Your dissimararities merge well.
  2:36pm
dc pat:

DCE, exactly. Good point.
  2:36pm
dale:

as much as we could all sing along to this summer song, i don't think any of us knew who sang it
  2:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

Paper Lace? "The Night Chicago Died"?
  2:36pm
Cecile:

  2:38pm
Van in DC:

As Irene's adopter this year, I approve of this fill-in show. (like it matters bwaa ha ha...) Nice job Clay, and thanks.
  2:38pm
the glowing one:

that's from a bootleg? they are so much better than the re-recording.
  2:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: I believe it was Clay playing this very song last summer, that led you and Carmichael to rec the later, psychedelic BBs albums to me. I have 3 CDs of their 6 post-Pet Sounds albums, and so glad I got them! Thanks!
  2:39pm
PJ:

I was just thinking of the Beach Boys during the First Class song, and how you should really play Long Promised Road off of Surf's Up, but Surf's Up is great too. BTW, they were really good, shockingly good last night at Jones Beach. I have a few caveats about some musical choices but if they are coming to your town you should go see them.
  2:39pm
DCE:

just no surf in Cleveland
  2:39pm
Bob perry:

Fantasy World & Disney Girls. Great afternoon w you Clay..
Bob from Ft. Lauderdale B. Boys Rule!!
  2:39pm
Fulton 5:

No time for the Summertime Blues.
  2:39pm
KP:

Beach Boys at Jones Beach. "Water" on the water. Wish they did this one though. Danka, Clay!
  2:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: I could have a large boat run by you on the Delaware, make some wake :)
But after Ken's wake-boarding incident, you may be understandably reluctant to do that :)
  2:40pm
ac/dc pat:

I just don't feel like working anymore..
  2:40pm
Cecile:

oh, you are so welcome!
  2:41pm
ac/dc pat:

I have like 7 weeks of vacation but no dough to go anywhere.
  2:41pm

  2:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

  2:43pm
Keith in VT:

  2:43pm
Bob perry:

Felt so Nice Had to do it twice
  2:45pm
DCE:

Beach Grandpas, probably some Great Grandpas in there
  2:46pm
dale:

  2:46pm
Danne D:

That new Beach Boys single just kills me - it's like Mike Love sucked all of the soul out of it :(
  2:47pm
ac/dc pat:

DCE: correct again, think I'll take a week off and work as a musician for once.
  2:47pm
dale:

  2:47pm
DCE:

  2:54pm
KP:

Danne D they did another new one that Brian sang and it was really good.
  2:55pm
tomB:

well that was an epiphanatic moment! I was starting up CDs but the console was still set to tuner. It came on exactly with the opening of Surf's Up, so I thought it was the CD, but I had left it o/o state for my dad's memorial, where it was a big hit. How did it get back to NYC? That's why god made the radio.
  2:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

Nicely put steve!
  2:55pm
T.Waits:

The piano has been drinkin'

  2:58pm
Van in DC:

Thanks again Clay!
  2:59pm
Cecile:

Clay, you ever think of wedding DJing back in Iowa? I think you have those crowd-pleasing ways, and would instantly be better than 99% of all the DJs out there.
  3:00pm
Cecile:

or even in the Quad city area...or the Upper Midwest...
  3:08pm
tomB:

South Dakota's own David Soul! The 1 song by Bobby Goldsboro I like, but it's amazing.
  3:40pm
Aloha from Pearl Harbor:

You Kno, Clay, if we were to surf to "nucleotide", it'd be more like oozing the wave....
c'mon Clay and ooze with me in Hawaii
