	6:08pm kata: I think the bigger issue is that of mental health. You can kill someone with a kitchen knife if you wanted. It's the wanting that is the problem, not the tool. Not to say I'd be against gun control. Not sure on that one.

	6:12pm sfrances: Sadly, one issue that isn't raised with gun control are all of the gun related suicides. only homicide or accidental shootings get brought into the debate: and since mental health is often a factor in suicide as well as homicide...it'd be nice if that got as much attention as the NRA throws at gun control attempts....(sorry, stepping off soapbox for the rest of the show)
	6:12pm Matt from Springfield: Mental health is the big one. While it's impossible to control guns so that no one who's capable of murdering will get them (the shooter WAS a "law-abiding citizen" up until his murders), an idea often thrown around is to limit the magazines that can be sold to 10 bullets or less. Won't stop killing, but will make spree killing a lot more difficult.
	6:12pm umm: interview someone from the shooting saying how they're shocked and splice it with a sample of 'shock the monkey' that's trivializing it a bit no?
	6:12pm Timb: Greetings from Fort Lauderdale! Not sure how I feel about the gun control issue. I feel like there should be less guns and less access to guns, but I also know that the government would love for us to be a gunless society. For me, the shooting seems to be more of a mental health issue. I'd like to know if the perp was on any antidepressants or prescription drugs that may have influenced him to do such a terrible and irrational thing.

	6:13pm kata: one's relationship to community & society plays a major role in a person's mental health, so yes Seang -- suburban alienation is a huge part of it I'd guess.

	6:18pm Caryn: I just have a problem with the NRA being opposed to any additions to background checks and waiting periods when purchasing a gun. I don't see why they oppose this, since it wouldn't stop "law-abiding" "sane" people from getting legal firearms, but might prevent rash gun purchases and disturbed people from getting guns easily. (They could still get their hands on a gun, but with more difficulty.) Or maybe we should do the Chris Rock solution. Guns are easily available, but bullets cost like $5 each. Big-time spree shootings would be really expensive.

	6:20pm Honey Water: There is ZERO rationalization for allowing ANYone the purchase of assault weapons. I listened to an NRA guy stumbling over a response to that direct question. He was actually suggesting people DO hunt with machine guns.

	6:23pm Caryn: I think the fact that gun permit applications have gone up 43 % in Colorado after the shooting is disturbing. Loads more guns around is not going to make things any safer. @Honey Water: agree. You want to hunt, you don't need an assault rifle. Not only is it excessive, it's just poor sportsmanship. Like dynamite fishing. The Monty Python sketch about hunting mosquitoes with bazookas and tanks seems to be the next step.

	6:25pm Matt from Springfield: @Caryn: Especially out West, gun ownership often = feeling of safety. Even if just for their home, the shooting in a movie theater in their state disturbed them and really shattered illusions of safety.

	6:25pm Honey Water: I was relating your comment about alienation with him not being a loner. He wasn't alienated from some group of friends. One wonders why those friends couldn't spot his mental health problems.
	6:26pm Carmichael: The big misnomer in that last statement was that gun control is always equated with evil intentions. Can there never be a sound rationale for controlling the distribution of weaponry to the populace? Citizens were worried about being controlled by a domestic or foreign threat; shouldn't the military or law enforcement reasonably be worried about the citizenry rising up en masse?

	6:26pm Ike: Agreed @seang. They keep saying that MORE people should carry a concealed weapon so they can shoot back mass murderers like this, but it's not that simple. You're just as likely to misidentify the perp and shoot other victims also drawing their weapons to defend themselves, or getting shot by police or security who think YOU are the shooter, because you're raising your gun in self-defense.
	6:27pm kata: I hear ya Honeywater... I'm also saying, the USA is effed up. And it seems one is very lucky now to go through life here without getting a therapist or losing your shit at one point or another.

	6:29pm Matt from Springfield: @Ike: I believe in allowing for concealed carry, after the person has applied and undergone extensive training like it is now. But, the RATIONAL person would realize the limits of concealed carry, for the reasons you mentioned, as well as the possibly of your gun being grabbed from you as you draw it--putting you in even more danger.

	6:29pm other david: The most rabid pro-gun folks, the ones who talk about the right to bear arms as a bulwark to prevent a totalitarian state, often seem to be the same folks who resist any cuts to military spending and the ones who back the patriot act... I'm in Ireland, I actually own a .22 bolt action rifle - my father and I go out and shoot paper at the range sometimes, it's a bit of fun. I'm also a vegetarian, so um, I'm not going to hunt with it. When not in use, the guns are locked away in a safe. Guns give me no feeling of security, rather they're a huge burden and responsibility. Anyway, that's my 2c.
	6:30pm Honey Water: And the nearly universal response to at the very least making assault weapons illegal has been:"Someone that warped would find another way to kill people." How is that responsive to banning assault weapons? I know there's a very graphic analogy to such faulty logic, but it escapes me now.
	6:30pm umm: someone willing to bring a gun into a cinema and shoot multiple members of the public has nothing to do with a batman movie, it's his inner desire to harm simple.
	6:30pm Andrew Waterloo: @Ike, people are also under the false assumption that hand guns are somehow accurate or that they're going to be able to shoot another person under pressure.
	6:31pm Bad Ronald: Unfortunately gun control laws are just like drug control laws. Folks are gonna get their hands on what ever they want any way they can if they need it bad enough. You can build a zip-gun with a curtain rod a 2x4, rubber band and a door latch once you got your hands on some rounds or a bomb with items that can be legally obtained. It wont prevent the perps.
	6:31pm Caryn: I think in some cases, being a "loner" is a consequence and symptom of underlying emotional or psychological problems, which can also lead to other consequences like violent behaviour. But the two symptoms are not causally related to each other. They are just 2 different manifestations of underlying issues. People are loners for many reasons, people are violent for many reasons. Sometimes both coincide.
	6:32pm Ken From Hyde Park: How about that TV show on The Discovery Channel? I think it's called "American Guns" and the people are from Colorado. I caught one episode where they custom-built a .50 caliber hunting rifle for some guy. That seems like a lot of firepower for hunting deer or even elk.
	6:32pm Carmichael: I have to split, but my final salvo is that I don't want to ban weapons. But I do want to control the hell out of 'em. Freedom = responsibility, not privilege.
	6:32pm Matt from Springfield: Yes, OD, a huge RESPONSIBILITY. Especially carrying a concealed handgun--I don't want to do that, I wouldn't even consider that unless I was already a cop for example, and also carried off duty.

	6:33pm Caryn: The shooter seemed to be doing really well in his studies and have a rich social life until a little under a year ago, when his studies started tanking and he was clearly going through something. Why no-one around him tried to find out what was wrong is what I wonder about.

	6:33pm Ike: Agreed, Matt, O.D., & Caryn. Some gun enthusiasts desperately want to believe they could EASILY blow away a mass murderer like this, like in a western. But situations like this are much murkier in real life.
	6:33pm Honey Water: @Bad Ronald: You're making that same universal response I've heard all week. The difference is the huge NUMBER of people that can quickly be mowed down by an assault rifle. And the ridiculous argument that if only someone in the theater had had a concealed gun, all would be well: He was wearing full "armor"! A gunfight in the theater would not have stopped him and might well have killed more innocent victims in the line of fire.
	6:34pm Andrew Waterloo: As a loner I can say that I know a lot about animosity and blame. I don't feel that way now. But, it is something I have had to deal with.
	6:34pm Matt from Springfield: Rich social life? I heard that he never really talked with his colleagues and students and was withdrawn? It got substantially worse in the months leading up to now, but it seemed to me he had an inadequate social life.

	6:39pm Caryn: @Bad Ronald: through, but if you go through all that to get your hands on a gun, you have to really want one. The fact that in many places, you can have a fight, be pissed off, and immediately go buy a gun and some ammo, leads to plenty of tragedies that might have been avoided by just having the person calm down or sober up. Gun control will never stop all gun violence, but, hell, health care isn't going to stop all death ever, but it's best to try and prevent easily avoidable tragedies.

The introductory piece mixes police scanner outakes from the Aurora shootings, a guitar sample from Yes' "Starship Trooper,' plus keys and bass added by yours truly. Digi-Pidge mix. I did receive a complaint on the Accuplaylist from a listener who felt it was in bad taste. I'm not sure if it is or if it isn't. It's just how I responded to the incident. It was also postualted that we've all become somewhat desensitized to violence and I think that is possibly true. No one I encountered was overwhelmed or particularly distraught by what had transpired - they still attended the movie and carried on pretty much as usual, but perhaps this is what we do in a society that frequently doesn't make sense and sometimes spawns horrific violence. We carry on. Like you, I was shocked and saddened by what transpired.

Thanks do much for listening to this episode of The Dusty Show. I hope that my coverage of the Aurora shootings didn't seem flippant or insensitive. Of course, it was a terrible tragedy. I can't imagine the suffering of those involved and their families. I would love to see assault rifles and large ammunition magazines outlawed. As far as TOTAL gun control, I don't think so. After seeing the ferocity of the police at Zuccotti Park, I feel a world where only the cops and the military have guns might lead to some kind of totalitarian scene. I do resent the NRA for their lobbying and for their hardline stance on guns. Who knows how it will play out. Oh, what a world, eh? It just keeps getting crazier and crazier. Or, does it? Is it the media that tells us it is? I can't tell anymore. Greenland is melting. Grand Canyons beneath the Arctic. Iceberg's calving, James Holmes, Face-eaters, on and on and on and on and on .... 	6:08pm kata: I think the bigger issue is that of mental health. You can kill someone with a kitchen knife if you wanted. It's the wanting that is the problem, not the tool. Not to say I'd be against gun control. Not sure on that one.

	6:12pm sfrances: Sadly, one issue that isn't raised with gun control are all of the gun related suicides. only homicide or accidental shootings get brought into the debate: and since mental health is often a factor in suicide as well as homicide...it'd be nice if that got as much attention as the NRA throws at gun control attempts....(sorry, stepping off soapbox for the rest of the show)
	6:12pm Matt from Springfield: Mental health is the big one. While it's impossible to control guns so that no one who's capable of murdering will get them (the shooter WAS a "law-abiding citizen" up until his murders), an idea often thrown around is to limit the magazines that can be sold to 10 bullets or less. Won't stop killing, but will make spree killing a lot more difficult.
	6:12pm umm: interview someone from the shooting saying how they're shocked and splice it with a sample of 'shock the monkey' that's trivializing it a bit no?
	6:12pm Timb: Greetings from Fort Lauderdale! Not sure how I feel about the gun control issue. I feel like there should be less guns and less access to guns, but I also know that the government would love for us to be a gunless society. For me, the shooting seems to be more of a mental health issue. I'd like to know if the perp was on any antidepressants or prescription drugs that may have influenced him to do such a terrible and irrational thing.

	6:18pm Caryn: I just have a problem with the NRA being opposed to any additions to background checks and waiting periods when purchasing a gun. I don't see why they oppose this, since it wouldn't stop "law-abiding" "sane" people from getting legal firearms, but might prevent rash gun purchases and disturbed people from getting guns easily. (They could still get their hands on a gun, but with more difficulty.) Or maybe we should do the Chris Rock solution. Guns are easily available, but bullets cost like $5 each. Big-time spree shootings would be really expensive.

	6:26pm Carmichael: The big misnomer in that last statement was that gun control is always equated with evil intentions. Can there never be a sound rationale for controlling the distribution of weaponry to the populace? Citizens were worried about being controlled by a domestic or foreign threat; shouldn't the military or law enforcement reasonably be worried about the citizenry rising up en masse?

	6:26pm Ike: Agreed @seang. They keep saying that MORE people should carry a concealed weapon so they can shoot back mass murderers like this, but it's not that simple. You're just as likely to misidentify the perp and shoot other victims also drawing their weapons to defend themselves, or getting shot by police or security who think YOU are the shooter, because you're raising your gun in self-defense.

But, the RATIONAL person would realize the limits of concealed carry, for the reasons you mentioned, as well as the possibly of your gun being grabbed from you as you draw it--putting you in even more danger.

	6:29pm other david: The most rabid pro-gun folks, the ones who talk about the right to bear arms as a bulwark to prevent a totalitarian state, often seem to be the same folks who resist any cuts to military spending and the ones who back the patriot act... I'm in Ireland, I actually own a .22 bolt action rifle - my father and I go out and shoot paper at the range sometimes, it's a bit of fun. I'm also a vegetarian, so um, I'm not going to hunt with it. When not in use, the guns are locked away in a safe. Guns give me no feeling of security, rather they're a huge burden and responsibility. Anyway, that's my 2c.
	6:30pm Honey Water: And the nearly universal response to at the very least making assault weapons illegal has been:"Someone that warped would find another way to kill people." How is that responsive to banning assault weapons? I know there's a very graphic analogy to such faulty logic, but it escapes me now.
	6:30pm umm: someone willing to bring a gun into a cinema and shoot multiple members of the public has nothing to do with a batman movie, it's his inner desire to harm simple.
	6:30pm Andrew Waterloo: @Ike, people are also under the false assumption that hand guns are somehow accurate or that they're going to be able to shoot another person under pressure.
	6:31pm Bad Ronald: Unfortunately gun control laws are just like drug control laws. Folks are gonna get their hands on what ever they want any way they can if they need it bad enough. You can build a zip-gun with a curtain rod a 2x4, rubber band and a door latch once you got your hands on some rounds or a bomb with items that can be legally obtained. It wont prevent the perps.
	6:31pm Caryn: I think in some cases, being a "loner" is a consequence and symptom of underlying emotional or psychological problems, which can also lead to other consequences like violent behaviour. But the two symptoms are not causally related to each other. They are just 2 different manifestations of underlying issues. People are loners for many reasons, people are violent for many reasons. Sometimes both coincide.
	6:32pm Ken From Hyde Park: How about that TV show on The Discovery Channel? I think it's called "American Guns" and the people are from Colorado. I caught one episode where they custom-built a .50 caliber hunting rifle for some guy. That seems like a lot of firepower for hunting deer or even elk.
	6:32pm Carmichael: I have to split, but my final salvo is that I don't want to ban weapons. But I do want to control the hell out of 'em. Freedom = responsibility, not privilege.
	6:32pm Matt from Springfield: Yes, OD, a huge RESPONSIBILITY. Especially carrying a concealed handgun--I don't want to do that, I wouldn't even consider that unless I was already a cop for example, and also carried off duty.

	6:33pm Caryn: The shooter seemed to be doing really well in his studies and have a rich social life until a little under a year ago, when his studies started tanking and he was clearly going through something. Why no-one around him tried to find out what was wrong is what I wonder about.

	6:33pm Honey Water: @Bad Ronald: You're making that same universal response I've heard all week. The difference is the huge NUMBER of people that can quickly be mowed down by an assault rifle. And the ridiculous argument that if only someone in the theater had had a concealed gun, all would be well: He was wearing full "armor"! A gunfight in the theater would not have stopped him and might well have killed more innocent victims in the line of fire.
	6:34pm Andrew Waterloo: As a loner I can say that I know a lot about animosity and blame. I don't feel that way now. But, it is something I have had to deal with.

The fact that in many places, you can have a fight, be pissed off, and immediately go buy a gun and some ammo, leads to plenty of tragedies that might have been avoided by just having the person calm down or sober up. Gun control will never stop all gun violence, but, hell, health care isn't going to stop all death ever, but it's best to try and prevent easily avoidable tragedies.
