Favoriting September 20, 2012: Occupy - One-Year Anniversary

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments Approx. start time
This episode of the Dusty Show involves the first anniversary of Occupy Wall Street in Zuccotti Park (Lower Manhattan - NYC). As you may know, I spent a good deal of time following the Occupy movement from its inception until earlier this summer. I am proud of that work and I continue to follow Occupy's movement with interest, hoping they'll be able to survive and evolve as they have thus far. Happy Birthday Occupy! Thanks for making this a very interesting and meaningful year, indeed.

Thanks for checking out this episode of The Dusty Show. This Occupy Annivesary program was special to me. I've invested a lot of time with this movement and, aside from interest in what they're all about, I've also made some nice friends and met a lot of fascinating people through OWS, so for that I am grateful, and I am grateful for all the hard work they have done and for all that they have accomplished. Though OWS has been much-maligned in the press and is often the subject of derision, I do feel it is an important movement addressing the most serious and compelling issues of our time. I wish them much success in the future and I will continue to monitor and report back occasionally, on their ongoing actions.

It's late as I am typing this, 4:46am, 9/21/12. The last day of Summer? I think so. Kind of sad. But fall should be nice, and winter to follow. I love them all, all the seasons, as I get older, and they become more precious and finite in number. I hope you are doing well, listener, and that you'll continue to tune in when you can. Don't be afraid to let me know what you think, pro or con, about the show. Your input is more than just important, you're soaking in it.

Until next time, take care and ...

The big news of the week here is a conglomerate announcing that it'll be firing 300 people, and on the same day, announcing extra bonuses to its' higher-ups (they got their regular bonuses in the spring, these are just EXTRA bonuses). Unbelievable hearing the rep saying that the layoffs are necessary because business is going bad, and literally within a minute, when asked how the company can give out bonuses, saying "hey, the company is doing really well and has plenty of money for these bonuses". What?

@Philo: Yup I think most of Europe and certainly all the nations that make up Scandinavia would be classed as socialist by GOP supporters!

What disturbs me, looking at the US from across the pond is, it seems like everyone says they "love America" but a vaste swathe of people actually hate other Americans, simply because they support a different party.

And the facts don't seem to really matter, if the right-wing narrative is that Obama is a socialist, well, Obama is a socialist, and they ignore any and all evidence to the contrary.

"There's been protesters near Wall Street for the last few days; "Operation Occupy Wall Street", the protesters are calling it. They have hopes of drawing attention to, and getting attention from, financial institutions and government officials whom the protesters feel have facilitated global recession and unemployment over the last few years. I wanted to get down in and amongst the protesters, and the people on the perimeter to find out what was going on. Let's do that on this episode of The Dusty Show." --9/22/11
  5:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey Clay! Matt IS here!! ;)
I transcribed that intro and posted it back in December, but wanted to post it again here, on the one year anniversary of me (and most of us other regulars here) actually finding out about OWS. I remember it well; at first I thought it was just another interesting Manhattan protest on the Dusty Show, but was so thrilled when it grew into the international Occupy movement. I'm also thrilled at this episode bringing the energy of Occupy back--and the return of Brendan! Lauren with the not-so-blue-anymore hair! And the other friends we've met in the past year.
  6:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

While there aren't so many street demonstrations from Occupy anymore, Brendan's right; Occupy is a movement, Occupy is an idea--it's here to stay. Like the Civil Rights Movement in the '30s, it took awhile to deliver tangible change, but at least it started to move dialogue in that direction then. Occupy has already started to move dialogue forward; I hope it will continue to.

And who else to explore this new direction with than yourself, Clay! Such dedication, sensitivity, and consideration of all points of view. Just like your other episodes, this one showed how reasonable people can be, even if they have a different viewpoint (and how idiots can also be found among every viewpoint! ;) But as I sit here in Delaware, on my "reformist capitalist" vacay, I wish I could have live commented for this show, but feel so glad after listening to your Archive. Take care, Clay and fans! We are the 99 percent! And, always remember.
