Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

This episode was assembled hastily before my wife and I left on a long-anticipated trip to Paris. I want to thank Ken and Julie for filling in for me in my absence, and on short-notice, to boot! As often happens when I am not there to make tiny adjustments in the control room, my voice is sped-up to near chipmunk status as the WFMU cassette player and my home unit seem to operate at different speeds. Usually I slow my tape dwon a little to compensate, but, I was in France and so ... Alvinism occurs. My voice is already at Jackie Stewart levels of highness, so further emascualtion is hard for me to handle. That said ... let's get on with it.

That's it for another episode of TDS. I hope you enjoyed it. As I mentioned before, this show was assembled rather hastily as my wife and I prepared to travel.

Thanks to Ken and Julie for filling-in and saving the day. I'm glad I didn't have to play a re-run!

Don't forget ... October 11th - Thurs - 3-7pm - DUEL III between Fabio and Clay Pigeon. Should be Fun!

I also want to mention the Silent Fundraiser happening now on FMU. As I write this, I have only made 11% of my goal and that's not too good. Thanks to those of you who have pledged! I hope that if you haven't, and you enjoy this program, that you might be able to make a pledge to The Dusty Show and FMU.

Well, I guess that's about it. Remember to email me when you can. It's always great to get email from listeners and to know you are out there. Especially if you have never gotten in touch before (though, you are always welcome whomever you are!).

dusty@wfmu.org

.Until next time, take care, enjoy the fall, and ... always remember!

Matt from Springfield:

I had some CD comps of 80s New Wave called "Living In Oblivion" half a life ago, it introduced me to a lot of these group and songs. I SWEAR Clay must have put those together, except that there's no Missing Persons on those! :)

Hey Cecile and david and any other Pigeonites making their way in!

Clay is in Paris on vacay, so he left this show to be played tonight. ("Mr and Mrs Pigeon" checked into Julie's board early this morning!)

Ken:

Question for you regular Dusty show listeners - how does Clay Pigeon handle the cassette flip? Do I just switch it or do I play a bit of music during the flip?
  6:05pm
david:

thanks Ken and Matt - i thought so - i thought I remembered Clay saying he wouldn't be there this week...
  6:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Dinatekno: YES! I pogoed at my desk with you!
Some of the most high-energy synth rock ever!

hey y'all !
@ Ken: he either talks while flipping or plays a music track...

other david:

background music and seamless flip!
  6:06pm
david:

he plays some soothing piano music for the flip - forget what it's called
  6:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ken: Traditionally Clay plays Cy Coleman's version of Debussy's "Reverie in Topaz" while making I brief live exchange on mike. Since you prob don't have that sitting nearby, play some piano music if you have it and talk on mike briefly.
  6:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey frances and OD! Welcome to this "babysat" Clay playlist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm
Ken:

Cy Coleman huh? OK.
  6:09pm

@Ken: might I suggest some Rush for the flip?

@Matt: howdy mister - this couldn't be in better hands.. unless Ken decides to jump in the elevator again!

  6:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

Friendly folks, a nice Midwestern people mini-convention in NYC, on the Dusty Show!
  6:16pm
other david:

Clay has an amazing ability to get cagey/reluctant people to speak their mind. I suspect it's partly because he's such a good bloke.
  6:17pm
MenfussMike:

nothing wrong with a little Missing Persons.
  6:17pm
George Serr:

OMG!!! The Duel is on my Birthday.
  6:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

@david: With economies of scale, dominance of huge agribusiness, and oil subsidies, small farming is harder than ever. Except maybe for boutique/organic items. Future farmers "getting into" the business probably will be former restauranteurs/butchers who want to grow a fresh source of certain foods. In fact, some have already moved to the farm to do just that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm

Matt, I dont know if I want Andy to step up the stupid or the danger - anybody who knows the WFMU elevator can tell you, DONT jump in IT!

I wish Nader was running but no. Bernie Sanders should go for it.

nader is out this time dale...
  6:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

The fact that US election are the lesser of *only* two evils is part of the problem. Why not a choice of 6-7 evils, configuring themselves into alliances and opposition as circumstances permit.
  6:26pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

Jesse Ventura in 2016 maybe.
  6:27pm
dale:

i remember one year when venezuela went though 3 presidents in one year. i think the fear of assassination kept them in heavy rotation
  6:27pm
steve:

kano! play stuff like this during your duel with Fabio! the kids love it.
  6:27pm
MenfussMike:

I wish Ralph was running too. Voted for him last time.
  6:28pm
the glowing one:

6-7 evils still make not a single good
  6:28pm
other david:

I am fascinated at how socialism became a dirty word in the US.

From the early 1900's, it was Socialists like Eugene Debs agitating for the equality of women and people of colour.
  6:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

@dale: Still a better record than Africa, where 3 presidents can be rotated in one year sometimes because of actual assassinations!
  6:29pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

Dr. Jill Stein is the Green Party candidate this year. And Gary Johnson is a third party also.
  6:30pm
MenfussMike:

the lesser of 2 evils is STILL evil! Nader has endorsed Rocky Anderson. Ron Paul is getting my nod.
  6:30pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

Pretty disappointing that we really don't get to see anything from the other parties.
  6:31pm
david:

Jill Stein is running for Green, Roseanne for Peace and Freedom Party...
  6:32pm
Fredericks:

"The fact that US election are the lesser of *only* two evils is part of the problem."
In 2000, Nader spoke of an instant run-off.
  6:32pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

And marijuana too!
  6:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

@glowing one: More choices of candidates are still better, any politician should be treated with caution, but why not have more competition in elections?
  6:34pm
other david:

"The Republican and Democratic parties are alike capitalist parties — differing only in being committed to different sets of capitalist interests — they have the same principles under varying colors, are equally corrupt and are one in their subservience to capital and their hostility to labor."

^ that was said by Debs in 1904.

1904.
  6:34pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

Roseanne loves her medical marijuana. It will be very interesting in November for the possible legalization of recreational marijuana in both Washington and Colorado.
  6:34pm
Night Al:

Jill Stein and the Green Party will get my vote. I'm very liberal and make it a point to read everyone's website and platform on issues. www.gp.org speaks for me now that Dennis Kucinich is not running.
  6:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Fredericks: I would support achieving that goal using an IRV or similar system, but that would require consistent activism at a state level. Cali (or at least San Fran) seems to be the only place on that path.
  6:35pm
david:

Stein has instant run-off voting in the Green platform...
  6:37pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

Who is Ken voting for?
  6:38pm
Night Al:

Gary Johnson is ex-GOP. Ron Paul has some major opposing views on issues important to me. As do every other candidate but Jill Stein (and maybe Roseanne Barr).
  6:38pm
sfrances:

I've been impressed by the Dem running for city council here/my 'hood, he's gone door to door to meet everyone, sent follow up postcard tied to what was discussed in person: a real worker, progressive breath of fresh air.

  6:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

@OD: The main difference in America from 1904 to today, is that back then neither party was really organized; there were very liberal and progressive members in Republicans and Democrats, academics and unionists too, in addition to racists, Puritans, crooked financial elites and monopolists, throughout the country, in both parties.

We have to get off fossil fuels. Practically EVERYTHING in our society is made and processed/transfered from fossil fuels. Fiat currency is based on it, and society will fall if we don't become a locally green-fueled, green fed society.

So yeah, that's why I'm socialist.

Looks like we have critical mass on this triumvirate business... a three-party system...
  6:57pm

@Julie: Despite the Nationals baseball team thrilled about increased attendance, public transport still shuts down during late weeknight games. There's a public fight about who should pay for later service, NO ONE wants to step up.
  6:57pm
Night Al:

Ross Perot told everyone during the presidential debates from 1999, that ratifying NAFTA and the WTO trade agreements, would mean the end of the American middle-class. Obama is introducing the TPP trade agreements, known as NAFTA on steroids. Unemployment will only get worse for the USA if he's re-elected.
