Fatoumata Diawara is an engaging young West African actress turned singer who performs original songs blending Wassalou traditions of Southern Mali with international influences. Her debut cd Fatou was recently released by Nonesuch / World Circuit. She's one of the dozen artists selected to play the prestigious annual globalFEST world music showcase at Webster Hall on Sunday January 13.

You'll understand why she made the cut when you hear tonight's broadcast of her triumphant New York Debut September 28, 2012 at Pace University's Michael Schimmel Center For the Arts beautifully remixed for radio by engineer extraordinaire Don Wood.

Special thanks to John Seroff of Greenhouse Publicity and Isabel Soffer of LiveSounds, producer of the concert and co-producer of globalFEST.

We also play lots of preview tracks by artists coming to NY to play Globalfest and other Arts Presenters Conference - APAP - showcases. There are a lot of them - here's the very handy Unofficial Guide to World Music at APAP.

  6:32pm fred von helsing:

usually so quiet ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Your DJ:

Shhh...
  6:49pm tau ceti e:

Is all this music representative of your planet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Your DJ:

All I can say is, it's hard enough keeping up with the music now just on this planet... if we ever make contact, I'm done for!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm iTunes:

Gort!!! Klaatu barada nikto!!!
  7:08pm tau ceti e:

We will make allowances.
We are here to serve man.
Happy dancing humans are humans with taste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Dj Fancy Feast:

You know it's a slow night when only extraterrestrials are on the comments board...
  7:19pm tau ceti e:

We assume your puny metropolis is still busy remaking and remodeling from that climate attack. Just keep this music in transmit mode, or suffer the consequences. We would insert an evil laugh but this music disarms it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Dj Fancy Feast:

Save the evil laugh for Ken's show...
  7:32pm tau ceti e:

Why this music not planet-wide "hit"? Is your culture not spiritually homogeneous? We see it you do not. We start record label. "Serving Man." Extruded vinyl. Side of spice.
  7:43pm Looms:

Beautiful live set :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Your DJ:

Ah, finally an Earthling... thanks Looms!
  7:51pm fred von helsing:

Oh there's a few of us I hopes. Does Hoboken count? Anyways this stuff is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Dj Fancy Feast:

Hoboken? Kinda...
  8:04pm fred von helsing:

The pic of Ken on bike after Sandy is epic. His tale of FMU as an offshore island, also epic, potentially piratical. Can the station assert some kind of offshore economic zone claims? Maybe go dredging around the Port of Elizabeth? Maybe stake a claim to all the clams?
  8:06pm Looms:

Woohoo!
  8:09pm fred von helsing:

Woohoo: seconded!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Your DJ:

I need to see everyone in the listening audience doing Fatoumata's special dance... you too Fred...
  8:10pm fred von helsing:

You put your left foot in ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Your DJ:

Close enough...
  8:13pm fred von helsing:

saw Terakaft live, from backstage, it was fun
  8:20pm fred von helsing:

webster hall, never been there, is it nice ?
  8:26pm Looms:

And dancing we were. Has anyone got a stitch?
  8:27pm mto:

She is awesome - I hope her folks are listening back in Mali!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Your DJ:

Webster Hall is a big old ballroom / dance hall (originally opened 1886) with a couple of extra rooms put into play for events like Globalfest. (People my age also remember its 80s incarnation as rock club The Ritz.) The way it's set up for Globalfest is: 3 stages: The small mostly standing room "studio" downstairs, middle sized sit-down (if you can find a seat) "Marlin Room" and much more spacious stand-up Ballroom. At the peak of the event around 11 pm the downstairs rooms can get a little crammed. But it's fun to move back and forth between the rooms, nonstop music... and there are areas you can hang out and take a break.
  8:29pm fred von helsing:

"like"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Your DJ:

Thanks mto!
  8:31pm fred von helsing:

OK so it's basic'ly three levels plus chill spots. Sounds ideal for a festival-in-a-venue !

  8:34pm fred von helsing:

  8:35pm Looms:

Bravo! Thanks for this, Rob.
  8:40pm tau ceti e:

We withdraw our lunch wagons temporarily.
  8:44pm fred von helsing:

supercool stuff !
  8:49pm fred von helsing:

SRSLY a fest is a biz. If ordinary mortals saw the numbers for a fest like this one they might soil themselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Ordinary Mortals:

Excuse me, be right back, gotta use the loo
  8:51pm Extraordinary Mortal:

Loos are for loousers !
  8:52pm fred von helsing:
